Test Studio’s New Remote Execution Engine

The upcoming 2013 R1 release of Test Studio comes with an entirely reworked remote execution and scheduling engine. The need for this change came from a desire to allow parallelization of test runs and to bring different test types into parity. When enterprises have many test machines, they often want to be able to run tests from a test list across these machines, rather than running them in series. We also wanted to bring load tests into parity with web tests, allowing them to be scheduled, as well as making them easier to set up. All of this is addressed by the new remote execution engine....

The Relationship Between Exploratory Testing and Test Automation

There is a lot of information (and misinformation) on the role and value of exploratory testing in the testing process.  Many teams plan their testing practices based on verifying that requirements have been met, and that is an important approach. But software quality is more than just meeting requirements.  Sometimes requirements make assumptions that aren’t tested through requirements-based testing, and aren’t discovered until defects not related to requirements are found.  Also, many times requirements are focused strictly on business functionality, and don’t look beyond that to other parts of an application. Exploratory testing, on the other hand, relies on the ...

Asking the Wrong Questions on Test Automation

Whether at conferences or in casual discussions at companies, I talk to a lot of testers and in particular testing managers about the benefits of automation.  Almost to a person, they ask some variation of the following: “It will take a lot of money and time to buy tools and training, and get up to speed on effectively building automated tests.  When will we see a return on this investment?” I understand where that question is coming from.  Even a mid-sized testing organization is likely spending tens of thousands of dollars, and giving up hundreds of hours of productive testing ...

Spreading the Word on Software Testing

I’m Peter Varhol, a new evangelist for TestStudio, and I’m happy to be joining the Telerik team and my colleagues Steven Vore and Jim Holmes.  I’ve done a wide variety of things in my career, including software evangelism, product management and marketing, development and testing, technology journalism, and university teaching. Among the professional activities I’ve been doing over the past several years is speaking at various conferences and user groups on the subjects of software testing and quality, and I’ve brought some of that with me to Telerik.  At the end of August, I’m giving a talk at the Conference ...
