Unable to upgrade existing automation framework from webaii 1.1 to 2.0 version

Hi,

On upgrading the automation framework to design canvas 2.0 we encountering issues which were initially working fine using Design canvas 1.1 version.Below are details of the issues:

Issues encountered
The some of the objects identified using design canvas 1.1 were automatically deleted on upgrading the automation framework to design canvas 2.0.

Steps we followed to upgrade Design canvas 1.1 to 2.0
1. Uninstall the design canvas 1.1.
2. Restart the machine.
3. Installed the design canvas 2.0 & Restarted the machine.
4. Update the dll's artoftest.webaii, artoftest.webaii.design with respect Design canvas 2.0.
5. During building the framework we have found that some of the objects were deleted which was initially identified the using Design canvas 1.1 .

Kindly provide your feedback as it would be highly helpful.

Hi Dev,

Can you please elaborate more on the problem you encountered? By Design Canvas 2.0 which product exactly do you mean? We have WebUI Test Studio Developer and QA edition, the Dev running in Visual Studio while the QA is a complete standalone application.

Also which is the version of the product you have downloaded and upgraded to? Is this the latest 2010 Q2 Service Pack we released this week?

Can you also elaborate on what object were deleted? Are those elements in the Elements Explorer, tests in the Project Explorer or steps from a test?

Do you keep a version of the test project before you upgraded? Once we have a clear picture of the problem we may need the project to play and try to reproduce the issue.

Thanks for the feedback.

The product here we are using is webaii design canvas 2.0, which is before webaii got collaborated with Telerik. And on upgrading to Webaii design canvas 2.0 the objects gets deleted from the element explorer. 

We are tried upgrading by keeping/removing the previous webaii design canvas version but still the objects gets deleted. We have also tried by providing the 'CompareMode' as 'Title' in .aii file having objects in place of 'FullPath'.

Please provide feedback as it will be helpful.

Hi there,

For your information, we have reported this issue earlier in March and was being tracked by "Nelson" (who used to be earlier in Art of Test). It seems he has recently left the job. But as per him he had already reported this issue with telerik support and someone from the telerik development team was also looking into this issue.

But since now we are again tracking this ticket so you've asked us to upload the project files but since its a proprietary information, so can you please assure us that the uploading of the project through the form would be secure so that it is not visible to anyone. If not, then kindly provide us a secured way to provide you with the project files. Also if required we can set-up the live meeting to go through the issues we are facing.

Hi,

On attaching the test project(.zip file) we have found that maximum limit to attached file is 20MB. But our project is of about 50 MB, so please provide any other secured way for sending the attached files.

Hi Konstantin,

We tried to access the ftp as per details mentioned by you but we were blocked to access as we are encountering an error displaying
 "An error occured opening that folder on the FTP server. Make sureyou have permission to access that folder.    Details: The operation timed out ".

Hello Dev,

Do you attempt to access the Upload folder? You will probably get such error in attempt to access and upload in the root folder.

If that doesn't help, can you please send a screen capture when you get this error? That might help us diagnose the root of the problem.

Hi Konstantin,

The message comes on providing the ftp credentials and clicking on 'Logon' button i.e we are not able see any folder on accessing the ftp before that we get the error message.

Hi Dev,

This means the authentication fails. Please double-check whether the password is correct. You can also try running FileZilla we used to test the server. We had no problem connecting to the FTP outside of our network too.

I have double checked with username/password send by you and using the Filezila and providing the credentials we still not able to connect. We get error as mentioned below:

Error:   Connection timed out
Error:   Failed to retrieve directory listing ' .

Hello Dev,

You can't connect to an ftp server from windows explorer since it always transfers files in passive mode. On the second screen shot FileZilla reports running in passive mode too which you can change from the Edit -> Settings -> Connection/Ftp -> Transfer Mode set Active. I hope this helps!

Can you please provide the details steps to remove passive mode .We tried to change from the Edit -> Settings -> Connection/Ftp -> Transfer Mode set Active. But still we didn't succeed in doing so and again encountered the same issue.

Hi Konstantin,

I have gone through the FileZilla forums, as per the forum steps "Edit - Settings... --> Connection-FTP : Click 'Active' and disable the fallback option below. Configure the settings in Connection-FTP-Active mode." I am not able to locate and update the settings as per the forums steps.

I am still getting the passive mode in output, please refer the attached screen shot for reference.

Hi Dev,

This could be a firewall issue so you may need to contact your network administrators for assistance. Fortunately the FileZilla Wiki FAQ looks pretty helpful and I also found this Network Configuration page discussing the setup of the client.

I also found this thread discussing ftp problems and people are running various clients to solve those issues. I hope this info helps and please post back once you guys have uploaded the project.

Hello Dev,

I got your project and successfully loaded the tests in latest WebUI Test Studio. All I had to do is to update the project references so that they no longer refer some outdated assembly version (set SpecificVersion to "false"). Please take a look at the attached image and apply this change for all our assemblies. Once done you should be able to upgrade the project and load any test in VS.

Hi Dev,

We can upload the upgraded project but I'm not sure if it would be useful for you as I'm running a very latest build of WebUI Test Studio. Can you please specify which build are you running and can you upgrade to the latest official release? You can find details about it on the blogs here. We also have the latest custom build (I'm running on my test environment) here. This was the build I used to upgrade the test project.

Have you tried setting the SpecificVersion of the assemblies to "false"? Can you build the project now and load the tests?

We are using 'Design_Canvas_2.0.msi' build.

Yes I updated all my assemblies with Specific Version as 'false', but still I encountered the similar issue. Now I will upgrade using the build mentioned by you and will keep you posted in just a while.

Hi Dev,

That should be pretty outdated build and we've changed many things in the last 1-2 years.

Have you considered upgrading to the latest WebUI Test Studio? We work constantly on improving the product so now there are tons of cool features missing in that outdated build. You can check the blogs and videos in cause you're interested.

I tried to upgrade our framework with the latest build mentioned by you ,during installation it is asking for Registration key, by selecting automatic activation I encounter 'trial has been expired' and if I select manual activation, it navigate me to the key activation link, where i am unable to locate the manual activation link.

Can you please upload the framework updated by you in ftp with exact location. Once you upload please keep me updated by posting here.

This simply means I should be able to reproduce the issue locally with the project. I just need more info on the exact problem you have with the Elements Explorer update.

Does the project build successfully or do you get some errors? Can you post the errors if any?
Is there a test that you cannot load after upgrade? Or perhaps there is a test you cannot run and you get some error on playback?

Please let me know what the actual problem is and I will investigate the issue locally.

Hi Konstantin,

Initially when I open my previously created project and try to build my project with latest Telerik Webui installed provided by you (removing the older installed versions) I encounter error that 'artoftest.common assembly' not installed, so I have updated the latest and again build the solution.

 On build I encountered an error in 'ArtOfTest.WebAii.Core.OffsetReference.TopLeftCorner' mentioned in some of my scripts saying "The type or namespace name 'OffsetReference' does not exist in the namespace 'ArtofTest.Webaii.Core'(Are you you missing assembly reference?)" even i have updated the latest artoftest.webaii. assembly.

Now moving further, if I open any of the .aii file recorded earlier it shows me an error message displaying 'Do you want to upgrade the project with latest build installed'. After clicking 'Ok' I get the message like "Legacy project elements will be removed from project.However,the files may be still be in the source control or local disk." Please refer attached screen shot for reference.

Thus some of the objects identified earlier are no longer in the repository.

If we need any other details please post back I will be updating you accordingly.

Hello Dev,

The OffsetReference enumeration resides in the ArtOfTest.Common namespace. Using this namespace should resolve the error.

The warning from your screen shot is expected. This just warns you we exclude the obsolete files from the project upon upgrade but you may need to manually delete those if you have the project in source control.

Hello Konstantin,

Thanks OffserReference issue is resolved now and I dont have direct connection of project with source control.

On upgrading the framework still I encounter that around 40% of my objects are deleted automatically from the Element Explorer (refer screen shot for reference).

Is it possible for you to have live meeting with us to work on resolving the issue?

Hello Dev,

These errors like "Error 18 'Gabilan_Project.Pages' does not contain a definition for 'Case_CAS35243WRC2VP'" are a result of the Page merging that the product does in the new version. This element is being referenced in multiple tests where the page definitions are the same except for the friendly name. We now merge identical page definitions into one page in Elements Explorer and generate our Pages.g.cs based on the newly merged elements. The old version didn't perform this automatic merging of elements, which was causing Elements Explorer to be unnecessarily cluttered.

As a result this line of code simply needs to be changed from:

obj_UIVerify.VerifyTextOrLabel(Pages.Case_CAS35243WRC2VP.lbl_Title, obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("CECaseTitle", str_File) + str_ReqBarcode, "A new CE (Clinical Experience) case for Clinical Stage value " + obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("Clinical_Stage", str_File) + " is created successfully with Title " + obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("CECaseTitle", str_File) + str_ReqBarcode + ".");

To:

obj_UIVerify.VerifyTextOrLabel(Pages.Case_CAS34936.lbl_Title, obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("CECaseTitle", str_File) + str_ReqBarcode, "A new CE (Clinical Experience) case for Clinical Stage value " + obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("Clinical_Stage", str_File) + " is created successfully with Title " + obj_UIEvents.FetchValuefromXML("CECaseTitle", str_File) + str_ReqBarcode + ".");

I'm afraid you'll have to do multiple global find and replace operations in your source code files, one for each friendly name change that took place.

The way to tell which one is right is to look at what the definition used to be in Project.cs and look it up in the new Pages.g.cs file. When you see that the find expression matches you know you have the right one.

For example, in Project.cs we find Pages.Case_CAS35243WRC2VP.lbl_Title on line 8609 is this code definition:

It's the FindParam that's important to us: "lbl_Title", FindType.AttributesOnly, "", "id=title".

In Pages.g.cs there are two definitions for lbl_Title, one under Case_CAS34936 and another under Case_CAS5052926487QS. When we look at the definition for it under Case_CAS34936 we see:

public ArtOfTest.WebAii.Controls.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText lbl_Title

    get
    {
        return Get<ArtOfTest.WebAii.Controls.HtmlControls.HtmlInputText>("TagName=input", "id=title");

}

This is identical to what it was in Project.cs which means we can use Case_CAS34936 in place of Case_CAS35243WRC2VP.

So bottom line is you'll have to adjust/fix your own code to be compatible with the new version. Our code in the new version of the tool is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Hi Daniel,

Now since we have got the licensed versions of the Telerik WebU Test Studio tool (Developers edition), can you or your team help us in resolving the issue that we encountered while upgrading from WebAii design canvas v1.1 to Telerik WebUI Test Studio (developer's edition) that internally uses WebAii v2.0.

We have a automation framework of 800+ scripts and we really want to complete this upgrade ASAP so that we can use the latest tool. Kindly let us know ASAP what all will be required from our side.

Hi Dev,

The best thing you can do to help us assist you is to start by opening a Support ticket. It is best if you can separate each unique (and unrelated) issue into a separate support ticket (e.g. an element not found problem, versus quick execute not running, a problem with test A versus a problem with test B, etc.). Describe in as much detail as you can what exactly the problem is, which step is failing in the test, what the error message are that you seeing.

Sending us an Export (see attached screen shot on how to do this) after a failed test really helps us investigate reported test failure problems. Also attaching a problem test really helps us understand the structure of your test so we can advise how to improve upon it.
