Hi

After running the automated test in Microsoft Test Manager a log file is generated "tmiResult_tr". When I try to open this attachment, I get error "The attachment cannot be viewed". Any idea? I am using Web UI QA Edition.

Thank You,
QA

Hello,

I work with the poster of the above message.  I have the 2010 R3 Developer version installed - and I am able to open the file without any issues.  Our other team member, who also has the QA version installed, is unable to open that file.

Please note that in all 3 cases, we are double-clicking the file from Test Manager - and are expecting the file to open in Visual Studio (all 3 of us have VS 2010 Ultimate installed).  The only difference between us is that I have Developer installed and the other two don't.  So it appears this has something to do with it.

Also all 3 of us are able to open all other test result attachments that are created during a test run.  It is just this file that we are having a problem with - but it is the most important file because it contains valuable information needed to troubleshoot failed tests.  So it is important that all 3 of us be able to open and look at that file.  Any help in accomplishing that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Shashi

Hi Shashi,

Thanks for the details - we will work on it investigating the problem.

In the mean time - Dipti - I see you have downloaded our latest release of Test Studio R1.2011. It now contains both standalone (former QA Edition) and VS integration plugin (former Dev Edition) products. Do you still have problems opening .trx files with latest release? I've tried it and can open the .trx result files without any problem.

Please tell me if it works at your side also.

Kind regards,

Hi Daniel,

I had to uninstall new version and re-install older version 2010.3.1421.0 QA Edition because my collegue (Shash)i is still having issue with the 2011 version.

Thank You,
Dipti

Hi Dipti,

Is it possible for you to send us the file you have problems opening?

I would also suggest all of you installing the new Test Studio R1.2011 release, which will install both standalone and Visual Studio plugin and will hopefully solve your problem with opening the specific results.

Daniel,

Migrating to the 2011 version is not an option for us right now as none of our tests run in that version in my company's desktop environment.  Telerik's sample tests do not run either.  I have been working with Cody on this issue - please see support id 425811 for details and current status.

Thanks,
Shashi

Hi Daniel,

My colleague just installed the trial version of the Developer version (R2010.3.1421.0) and she is now able to open the tmiResults file in Visual Studio and look at the test run report.

So I think it confirms that the Developer version is needed to be able to open this file.  It seems to me that this is a defect - since tmiResults.trx is a file created by Test Manager, I think one should be able to open this file regardless of which version is installed.  Would you agree?

I realize that all users will have the plug-in installed with the R2011 version - but I still think this should be looked at and fixed.

Hi Shashi,
    thank you for the feedback.

tmiResults are specific to Test Manager (which is not a Telerik product) and are only intended to be used on machines that have Visual Studio. We discussed this with our developer and we decided against changing this implementation for the time-begin.

All the best,

Stoich,

With all due respect, I have to disagree with the decision for the following reasons:

a) Test Manager is a tool designed for QA engineers - so all the functionality it offers (including the tmiResults file) should be accessible to all QA users.

b) While it is true that the tmiresults file can be viewed only in Visual Studio, you (and your developer) seem to have made an assumption that only developers would have Visual Studio (and therefore the decision to require the plug-in to be installed in order to view the tmiResults file).  If I am correct, you may want to reconsider that assumption.  Given the tight integration between VS, Test Manager and TFS (which is our requirement and defect management tool), all our QA engineers have Visual Studio on their computers (I imagine this is true with other companies who are using Test Manager and TFS as well).

c) Automated tests are generally executed by QA engineers - and they are the ones who do the initial troubleshooting of test failures.  When running WebUI tests through Test Manager, the tmiResults file is the only source of the WebUI logging output - which is so invaluable in troubleshooting test failures.  Since WebUI is a tool primarily directed at QA engineers, I do not understand why you would block your users from performing this function.

I hope you will take the above into account and reconsider your decision.

I realize that this issue will probably be resolved when we move to R2011 where everybody would have the Developer plug-in as well.  However, as I have explained before, moving to that version is not an option right now for us.  Any help you can provide in getting us around this roadblock would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shashi

Hi Shashi,
    thank you for your feedback!

Since the current version of Test Studio already comes pre-packaged with both Standalone and VS-plugin I don't believe this will be such a big problem. Regardless I will make sure our developers are aware of this feedback.

Best wishes,
