Step descriptions not changing to sync with changes

We have a test developer experiencing an issue where step descriptions are staying static. For example, if a test is recorded that clicks the element "Button A", the step description is "Click on Button A" but if the primary target is changed to "Button B", the description remains "Button A". This seems to be happening for any changes made. Changing to data-driven, for example, doesn't update the step description to show it is data-driven. Renaming an element doesn't update the step description to the new name. Etc.

I sat with this developer and saw this happen with a brand new step, so the problem is not that she had previously customized the description and that stopped the updating.

Any thoughts on why she might be seeing this behavior? Perhaps there is a setting somewhere that was mistakenly changed?

Thank you.

Hello Todd,

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing such a sync issue.

I've tried reproducing the problem on my side with the latest version of Test Studio and I was not able to. What is the version of Test Studio you are using? If this is an older version upgrading to the latest version might work for you.

On your question "Perhaps there is a setting somewhere that was mistakenly changed?",  no, there is no such setting in Test Studio.

When you rename an element can you try refreshing the elements in Elements Explorer and see whether the step description changes?

Another thing I would like you to try is closing and reopening the test you are working with, is the issue still persists?

Also could you please try creating a brand new project and see whether this problem is still reproducible?

A short video demonstration with your steps might be quite helpful to us.

Please note that you are writing in a forum post and all the information you are providing is public, if you are going to disclose any sensitive information I encourage you to submit a ticket, where all the communication remains private.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I'll catch up with the test developer that was experiencing this issue and try these recommendations. Should they not correct the problem, I'll pursue further assistance through a support ticket. I appreciate the suggestions Ivaylo, thank you.

I experience this also from time to time.  Try renaming the element you have set it to in the primary target then changing it back to the original name, usually works for me.  Definitely a bug in there somewhere.

Hello Todd,

We've made a fix for custom step description in our latest Test Studio release, please upgrade your Test Studio version and give it a try.

What surprises me is that you are saying this is happening for a brand new step. Could you please provide me with the test that reproduces the problem for further review?

Please note that you are writing here in a public forum and if you are going to disclose any sensitive data you should better submit a ticket where the communication remains private. The other way to proceed is to create a dummy test with the problem and attach it here.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Our direction here has changed a bit and there has been a pause placed on our test automation development. For now, please assume my issue is fixed and I'll revisit this if the problem is still present when we resume. Thank you.
