Hi.
I am evaluating WebUI QA for our company.  We intend on using the tool to validate that our websites, and web apps, work with a variety of browsers and versions.  However, I am unsure how to go about testing this.  I see that i can test IE, Firefox and Safari and it launches whatever version is loaded on the PC, but how do I test with multiple browser versions?

I need to test IE6, IE7, IE8, along with various browser versions of Firefox.  Do I have to have seperate PCs setup for each browser version (since I do not believe you can have IE6, IE7 and IE8 on the same pc)?  How will this impact licensing of the webUI tool, since I assume I will need to install it on each of those test pcs.

This is only my 2nd day evaluating this tool, so I am very new to this (but am experienced with other automated tools.  We currently use SILK for our Client Server type apps, but found it does not work well with all our web apps, requires a lot of manual programming.).  Your help will be appreciated.

Hello Kim,

Our recommended path for testing various versions of IE, FF and Safari would be to create test servers (VM's perhaps) with various browser versions installed combined with the WebUI Run-Time Edition. The Run-Time Edition is a slimmed down version of WebUI that allows for execution, however will not allow tests to be created or edited, for that you will need the QA or Developer Edition.

The Run-Time Edition licensing is nominal at $199 per machine with Volume discounts starting at 3 licenses.

Below is a link to a blog post that help with the command line test runner that comes with the Run-Time Edition (as well as the QA and Developer Editions)

Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions!

All the best,

Thanks, good to know.
In the blog you pointed me to, there is mention of running execution through MSTest and MSBuild.  We do use Visual Studio, so is it possible to deploy execution of this to different machines using MSTest and MSBuild instead of the Run-Time edition?

Hello Kim,

Yes, you can utilize MSTEST, however you will still need to have the Run-Time Edition installed in addition to Visual Studio to execute the aii tests.

Another benefit to using our test runner is the ability to utilize our test lists which do offer some additional flexibility including specifying test run order and the creation of dynamic test lists.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!
