Manual Test Case Titles

When creating a new (or modifying an existing) Manual Test, what is the maximum number of characters allowed for the name? Some of our manual tests do not require steps if we make the name descriptive enough, but it appears that a character limit is being imposed. For example, I attempted to create a manual test with a name that was 176 characters long, but the test did not appear in the test-case folder in Test Studio until I shortened the name to 127 characters. If I attempt to rename the test case to a name that longer than 127 characters, the name field is outlined in red with hover text that says "The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters." Can I assume the character limit is actually 127 and not the 248 or 260 indicated in the hover text?

Hello Dennis,

Yes, since Test Studio creates physical files we hit the Windows OS limitation about long file path. The problem in this case is that the full path to the test gets too long, including the path to the project. You shouldn't get the error if you put the test in the project root, which project is located in a short folder path on your hard drive.

Without moving any files, what is the definitive character limit on any given test name? Or if it's easier, what is the character limit for a combined project/test name?

Hello Zoila,

Thank you for reaching us out. 

The limitation is for the fully qualified name of the test which includes its full path and is 260 characters. As previously advised by my colleague you should keep the project in a short named folder to reduce the fully qualified names of tests.
