Telerik blogs

Several thousand of you joined us for our "Build Free Or Die" webinar on Wednesday this week. It's always exciting for us to get to show you what we've been working so hard on for the past few months. We hope that you enjoy the new Notifications, MaskedTextBox and Sortable widgets which are all part of the completely free Kendo UI Core. Additionally, we delivered one of our most requested features of all time with grid frozen columns. That's really only scratching the surface though.

Did you miss the webinar? Maybe you were stuck buffering the entire time thanks to the person one cube over dowloading all of "Lonesome Dove". No worries! We recorded the entire session and you can watch it now. Better yet, its Friday so call your friends and have a Kendo UI Webinar viewing party. There's no better way to spend your free time than with the smooth sounds of the fabulous Rey Bango.

Questions And Winners

We had a vew techinical difficulties during the Q&A portion so I wanted to recap here some of the questions that we got from the webinar. There were quite a few as usual, so I apologize if your question didn't get answered. You can feel free to email me and we'll get your questions answered.

The other big thing we need to discuss is the winners of the great prizes that we had. Once again, I did not win anything even though I did use my wife's email to sign-up. Just as a reminder, the prizes were...

* 1x Mac Book Pro with Retina Display
* 2x Samsung Galaxy S5
* 3x iPhone 5s
* 4x amazon gift cards (500$)
* 25/50/100 x Kendo UI licenses

Wow.

I know the prize question is probably on the top of your priority list, but since I didn't win anything, lets do the questions first! :)

Questions

As I mentioned, we had an overwhelming amount of questions, but we picked out some of the ones we thought might be of interest to more people and decided to answer them here.

What is the music track playing during the intro?

Believe it or not, this was the NUMBER 1 MOST ASKED QUESTION! Our videographer, Gerard, must have really nailed it this time around. It's not a "song" in the traditional since of the word, but rather a stock audio track. In any event, you can find it here.

I have a SPA application built with angularJS and jQuery. How easy is it to add KendoUI to it?

Easy as pie! The Kendo UI Directives are a file that you drop into your application and you can begin to use Kendo UI immediately with just markup. Check out our AngularJS docs and demos as Mihai from the team just revamped them and they are HOT.

Can we use Kendo UI Professional in an open source project?

As Brandon mentioned in the Webcast, the Grid is part of Kendo UI Professional and is no longer offered as a GPL component. This may affect you if you were distributing the professional widgets before under GPL. If that is the case, we have some alternatives for you. Please email me and we'll help figure out what we need to do to keep your open source project going.

Pros/Cons when compared to Xamarin?

We actually get this one quite a lot! Xamarin vs the Telerik Platform is sort of an Apples to Oranges comparison. Xamarin is primarily for creating the actual application itself. The Telerik Platform provides you with a way to create hybrid mobile applications via AppBuilder, but it also gives you backend data services, push notifications, authentication, testing, analytics, prototyping and app distribution and management amongst a host of other features.

Feel free to use Xamarin with the Telerik Platform if that works best for your project.

Does MaskedTextBox accept Regex?

Yes! There is a rules configuration attribute for the MaskedTextInput widget if you would like to live dangerously and write your own Regex.

For Maps, can you change the provider like OpenStreet, Google, Nokia Here etc?

You can select any map tile provider who's license allows you to use it. You can also checkout Derick Bailey's epic write-up on tile providers and what options you have.

Does Kendo UI Work With Intellisense?

We ship vsdoc files for all of Kendo UI in the NuGet package and official downloads.

Please provide link to the book you mentioned earlier

We mentioned the Kendo UI Core book available from Falafel Software. It's called "Kendo UI - Nuts And Bolts" and we think its great! We've been working with the talented folks over at Falafel for a long time and they always produce top notch stuff. You can pick up a copy of the book from their website and get up to speed on Kendo UI in no time.

Is Kendo UI available to use with WPF/ASP.NET AJAX/Windows 8 ect.

Telerik provides products for all of the above mentioned platforms. They are not all built on Kendo UI, but are built by the same teams of talented folks who have been making UI controls for over a decade. If you're looking for controls for those platforms, we suggest you check out Telerik UI for WPF, Telerik UI for ASP.NET AJAX and Telerik UI For Windows 8.

Can you let us know when the toolbar widget will be available and which package it will be in.

The Toolbar widget is on our roadmap for Q2 and will land in Kendo UI Core as part of the open source collection, but of course will also be available with all other suites.

Is there plans on having a IE/FireFox developer tool add-in?

We were really thrilled to be able to release the Kendo UI Chrome Inspector, and we would love to bring it to other browsers. Unfortunately, some browsers are not as easy to integrate with in the developer tools area. If you would like to see the Kendo UI developer tools available for your favorite browser, I encourage you to request it on our UserVoice site.

WINNERS!

That's enough questions for now, although make sure you send yours to me directly if you would still like them answered.
