I want the selected item image to be shown in my combo boxes and found this code snippet:

Unfortunately, it seems to work in IE but not Firefox. Any possible workarounds?

The link that you have posted here points to Code Library article. The article contains not only a code snippet but a sample project that you can download.
I tested this sample project under Firefox and it works properly - please take a look at this demonstration video.
