Telerik Reporting

Roadmap

What's Coming in 2024?

Our team is happy to announce some of the most exciting features we will introduce this year!

We value your feedback, and we encourage you to keep sharing your thoughts, plans, and ideas for what you would like to see developed in Telerik Reporting in our dedicated feedback portal.

Telerik Reporting

.NET 8 Support

New feature

We are following closely the .NET evolution and will introduce support for its next version so that you can utilize it. The installed bits will contain dedicated examples targeting .NET 8 for easy test and adoption.

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint export formats on Linux

New feature

After we've introduced the SkiaSharp-based HTML and PDF report generation in R3 2023 we will extend the covered rendering extensions adding Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This way, we will provide all the functionality needed to deploy web applications with Embedded Reporting capability on the Linux platform.

VS Report Designer for .NET Core, NET 5, and NET 6 Projects

Improvement

We will implement the Visual Studio Report Designer for .NET Core, .NET 5, and .NET 6 projects to enable integrated design-time experience for these MS technologies.

Simplify Reports web service integration

Improvement

We will simplify the APIs for implementing the Reports web service that exposes the report generation engine to the web report viewers and not only.

This will make it easier to embed report preview functionality into your applications.

Web Report Viewer & Web Report Designer integration

New feature

Introduce built-in support of report embedding for preview with all of its settings enabling the end-user to switch to report design. This will allow the end-user to change and save a report definition when needed.

Rich text editor for the HtmlTextBox in Web Report Designer

Improvement

We will make it easier to compose rich text content in Web Report Designer by having a dedicated editor with all essential tools for text formatting, list creation, external links management, etc.

Improved Properties area in Web Report Designer

New feature

We have several improvements over the most used area in the Web Report Designer which allows changing any property of the report and each nested item:

  • Nested properties layout
  • Favorite properties
  • Context help
  • Improved title UX

Improved Expression editor in Web Report Designer

Improvement

We will improve the editing behavior when composing embedded expressions for TextBox and HtmlTextBox items so that it is easy to combine dynamic expressions with text, which will improve the productivity of the report authors.

End of Support for .NET 3.1 and .NET 5.0

Improvement

Starting with our upcoming releases, Telerik Reporting will exclusively support .NET versions 6.0 and above. The last release supporting older framework versions is the one scheduled for the end of January. After that, we will provide one full year of our outstanding support service for this release.

Note that all Telerik Reporting assets targeting the .NET development platform are built for .NET Standard 2.0, .NET 6.0, and .NET 7.0, so they are already compatible with this change.

We strongly encourage you to migrate your applications to the latest LTS versions of .NET currently supported by Telerik Reporting: .NET 6.0 and .NET 8.0. Upgrading to the latest .NET version will enable you to take full advantage of the latest features, performance improvements, and security enhancements provided by both Microsoft and Telerik. For more details check the following announcement.

End of Support for .NET Framework versions prior 4.6.2

Improvement

Starting with our upcoming releases, Telerik Reporting will exclusively support .NET Framework versions 4.6.2 and above. The last release supporting older framework versions is the one scheduled for the end of January. After that, we will provide one full year of our outstanding support service for this release.

We strongly encourage you to migrate your applications to a framework version supported by Microsoft (4.6.2 or above) or to migrate your application to the .NET platform targeting version 6.0 or above. Upgrading to a supported .NET Framework version will enable you to take full advantage of the latest features, performance improvements, and security enhancements provided by both Microsoft and Telerik. For more details check the following announcement.

SASS themes support

Improvement

We will introduce support for Kendo UI SASS themes in the HTML5 Report Viewer as well. We will continue developing our web-based report viewers and report designers with SASS theming in mind.

Kendo UI LESS themes support deprecation

Improvement

All HTML5-based Report Viewer controls are built on top of the jQuery Kendo UI components. As announced earlier in January 2022, with R1 2023 we will stop the support for LESS themes in Telerik and Kendo UI products. Any customer using the LESS themes is advised to migrate to an equivalent SASS-based theme instead. To learn more about why this change is happening and how it might affect you please review the “Future Plans for the Telerik and Kendo UI LESS Themes” blog post.

Easy table columns reordering in Web Report Designer

New feature

Column reordering is the second common operation next to the column resizing in a Table item. We will implement that operation with drag-drop action for the Web Report Designer.

Visual Studio Code Extension

New feature

We will introduce integration with VS Code to support faster embedding of the reporting functionality into your web applications.

SQL Query builder for Web Report Designer

New feature

We will improve and bring the SQL builder tool from the Standalone Report Designer into the Web Report Designer.  This will allow composing SQL SELECT statements in a visual manner, enabling power users to create their own queries on the fly.

Dedicated Data Source components

New feature

We will implement dedicated data source components to pull data from some of the most popular databases that can currently be utilized using the SQL Data Source component. This will allow easier setup for the report author making them more productive. The considered target data management systems include PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB.

Composite Data Source component

New feature

We will make it possible to present data that is joined from more than one data source. This will bring more flexibility into the hands of the report author. Imagine joining data from a web service providing instant stock rates with the client accounts' holdings for example. No warehouse in the middle of the process. No delay.

Report engine on the client - WebAssembly

New feature

On top of our Skia-based report generation engine implementation, we will compile a WebAssembly containing this engine. Effectively, web apps will be able to generate reports directly on the client.

More built-in expression functions

New feature

We will extend the available out-of-the-box functions that can be utilized when composing expressions. Additionally, we will make it easier to extend the available functions.
