Telerik Reporting

Simplify Reports web service integration

Improvement

We will simplify the APIs for implementing the Reports web service that exposes the report generation engine to the web report viewers and not only.

This will make it easier to embed report preview functionality into your applications.

VS Report Designer for .NET Core, NET 5, and NET 6 Projects

Improvement

We will implement the Visual Studio Report Designer for .NET Core, .NET 5, and .NET 6 projects to enable integrated design-time experience for these MS technologies.

End of Support for .NET 7

Improvement

You may already be aware that Microsoft discontinued .NET 7 support in May 2024. We would like to inform you that our plans are in line with this decision, and we will be ending our .NET 7 support for Telerik Reporting in November. This will give you extra time to transition from .NET 7 to .NET 8.

By upgrading to the most recent version of .NET, you will leverage the latest features, performance enhancements, and security improvements offered by both Microsoft and Telerik. This upgrade will ensure that you can make the most of the cutting-edge advancements provided by both entities.

Sunsetting the NuGet v2 Server

Improvement

As the .NET ecosystem evolves, so do our services. We are sunsetting our NuGet v2 server at nuget.telerik.com/nuget in 2024. Please switch to the v3 server at nuget.telerik.com/v3/index.json for better performance, security, and reliability.

The steps to upgrade are simple and require only one change to your NuGet package source URL to https://nuget.telerik.com/v3/index.json

User-invoked Initial Report Preview

New feature
We will introduce a feature that allows developers to configure whether a report should automatically generate or wait for user confirmation before loading. This enhancement empowers users to control the report generation process, particularly for resource-intensive reports. By preventing automatic report execution, this feature optimizes server resource utilization and enhances the end-user experience, reducing unintended delays and improving overall system performance.

Legacy ASP.NET WebForms Report Viewer retirement

Improvement
As part of our commitment to innovation and providing the highest service quality, we periodically evaluate our software suite to ensure it aligns with the latest technological advancements and meets the evolving needs of our customers. After careful consideration, we have decided to retire the legacy ASP.NET WebForms Report Viewer. The upcoming 2024 Q3 release will be the last one to include the report viewer assets.
Starting with the 2024 Q4 release, the ASP.NET WebForms Report Viewer will no longer be distributed with Telerik Reporting.
We strongly recommend using its successor - the HTML5 WebForms Report Viewer, which includes the latest features, performance enhancements, and security improvements offered by both Microsoft and Telerik.

Seamless Addition of User Functions in Standalone Designer

New feature
We will enable report authors to extend the Standalone Report Designer (SRD) using visual tools without restarting it, simplifying the process as a result. Authors will use UI to select and reference DLLs containing user functions or aggregates. Once referenced, these objects and functions will be automatically listed in the appropriate areas, such as the Expression Builder and Object Data Source setup.

SASS themes support

Improvement

We will introduce support for Kendo UI SASS themes in the HTML5 Report Viewer as well. We will continue developing our web-based report viewers and report designers with SASS theming in mind.

Dedicated Data Source components

New feature

We will implement dedicated data source components to pull data from some of the most popular databases that can currently be utilized using the SQL Data Source component. This will allow easier setup for the report author making them more productive. The considered target data management systems include PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB.

Composite Data Source component

New feature

We will make it possible to present data that is joined from more than one data source. This will bring more flexibility into the hands of the report author. Imagine joining data from a web service providing instant stock rates with the client accounts' holdings for example. No warehouse in the middle of the process. No delay.

Report engine on the client - WebAssembly

New feature

On top of our Skia-based report generation engine implementation, we will compile a WebAssembly containing this engine. Effectively, web apps will be able to generate reports directly on the client.

Expose export options to the end-user

New feature

We will expose the available settings to each export format to the end-user so that they have granular control over the produced document.

More built-in expression functions

New feature

We will extend the available out-of-the-box functions that can be utilized when composing expressions. Additionally, we will make it easier to extend the available functions.

.NET 9 Support

New feature
We are following closely the .NET evolution and will introduce support for its next version so that you can utilize it. The 2024 Q3 release will bring .NET 9 Preview compatibility and the 2024 Q4 release will strive for day zero support of the new framework version.

Improved serialization for .NET

Improvement

We will improve the resources serialization when serving reports to be consumed from the report viewer controls. The new serialization will utilize the built-into .NET functionality instead of relying on other libraries. This would improve performance and simplify the deployment process.

Preview Linux-generated reports on Windows

New feature

As a next step in improving our developer tools targeting Linux deployment, we will introduce the ability to easily preview a report on Windows as if generated on Linux. This ability will be added to the Standalone Report Designer for .NET (SRD.NET for short). This will allow verifying the resulting report document as it will look for the end user.
