Is there a way to give visual feedback when the datasource is changed(eg. darken the grid for a few millisseconds).

You could follow something along the lines of what Telerik has done in this demo, which is using Ajax and a loading panel to show a visual feedback whenever a change is made. Although this is done whenever any of the CRUD operations are performed there are also demos such as the Web Services one which shows how feedback from the datasource can be displayed (the small "Loading" icon above the Grid).
