Anybody out there got any ideas how to implement this - I've experimented with Select and had a look at the Range methods but nothing seems to cater for selecting any number of shapes and then arranging them equidistant apart.
Any pointers appreciated.

As per you assumption, the desired functionality is not available with the current implementation of RadDiagram. The implementation of such logic will require a complex algorithm calculating the available space, the selection and shapes sizes and the equal arrangement of the shapes depending on the selected layout mode, thus it cannot be easily achieve.
The best suggestion that I can five you for the moment is to submit a feature request for the desired functionality in the Kendo UI feedback portal, so our developers will consider its implementation if the item becomes popular:
