First thing that jumped out at me... a Vista Skin... and the old-style menubars.

A RibbonBar might be something to consider in the next upgrade ??

Hi MB,

Thank you for your feedback!

The ribbon bar was one of the things that we had in mind when we designed the new architecture of the RadEditor tools. Most probably we will have an example for ribbon bar in a month. The functionality is there, we just need some time to address the issues that will probably pop in the next couple of weeks and then we will post the example here. The ribbon will be integrated in RadEditor when all RadControls become part of the Prometheus suite, which is expected to happen by the end of the year.

Any update for the Office2007 skin & the complete 'ribbon' look (as the Editor for ASP.Net has)?

I've run a few demos of trial samples we made for mgt - and the same question/suggestion comes back - 'could you make it look more 2007 ribbon like?'

Thanks,

Jim

HI Jim,

The current release of RadEditor "Prometheus" does not feature the Ribbonbar toolbar - it only offers the standard default toolbar. This feature is in our ToDo list and it will appear in one of the upcoming RadEditor "Prometheus" versions.

I would like to use the Ribbonbar as well with the next version.  Anything on this yet?

Hi Carl,

We have not developed a Ribbonbar toolbar yet, because currently we are working on another toolbar mode which is requested by many customers. This toolbar mode functionality will be one toolbar for many editors on one page, like ToolbarMode=PageTop. It won't be hidden when the focus is outside the editor, but it will be disabled. Also, the developer will have the ability to set the toolbar's position on the page.

Nevertheless, we are still planing to develop the Ribbonbar toolbar, but there are only a few requests about it and due to this it's implementation priority is low.

Sincerely,
George

I would be interested in the ribbon for the current version of the editor as well.

However, perhaps I could be convinced that the RadEditor for Silverlight would be a better candidate since it's likely that it'll be easier to implement?  And I would be willing to wait if it were to be released not so far into the distant future.  I saw on the blogs something about another secret control being added to the next release of the Silverlight controls... here's hoping for the Editor (although I think it could be the Grid).

George,

I certainly understand features are developed & added based on demands - but I more disappointed in a lack of communication when priorities change.

  • Valeri Hristov responds on 9/2007 that maybe end of year.
  • You respond to my inquiry on 2/1/2008 that it will be in an upcoming Prometheus version.
  • You then reply on 7/2/2008 that it is now dependant on demand!  WTF?
If nothing else - could you please place a image overlay on the skins page that DOES SHOW the ribbon toolbar image as if it may be available - and indeed say that it is delayed/postponed/or perhaps as you now state - you need to place a vote for feature page on the site.  You mark the other images as being obsolete...

Sorry for a bit of a rant - but I check the skins page periodically looking to see if its been updated & check any release notes come out....perhaps I missed a note somewhere along the line?

I just didn't know or expect that it had been placed on the back-burner....lack of communication...thats all.

Jim

Hello Jim,

We completely understand your point and we are very sorry for not properly communicating priorities.

We have realized that this is an area that we definitely need to improve upon. That is why we have started implementing a public interface of our Bugs/Feature Requests/Improvements Tracking system. This will come as an addition to our Ticketing system on the website - everyone in the community will be able to see reported issues or feature requests and will be able to vote for them - priorities will be publicly communicated.

We are confident that this will improve the transparency in front of the community and will significantly facilitate the communication in the development process.

This new implementation will be available in the coming couple of months. Thank you for your patience.

Sincerely yours,
Ivo

Hi Kristian,

Thank you for your feature request.

The implementation of the desired RibbonBar is a harder task in RadEditor for ASP.NET AJAX because of its new semantic toolbar rendering. The toolbar rendering of RadEditor Classic is based on tables and image elements which allow high flexibility and Ribbonbar creation, but these elements and the used javascript drastically decrease the loading speed of the control.

During the development of the new editor, our goal was to streamline the editor's code, to remove the unnecessary code and features, to make the editor much faster.
The toolbar of RadEditor for ASP.NET AJAX has semantic rendering based on image css sprites and li elements. The new rendering loads the control a couple of times faster than its predecessor, but it is not suitable for Ribbonbar creation.

The Ribbon bar implementation in the new editor will require a serious time investment and a new toolbar rendering mechanism, which will inevitable decrease the loading speed of the control. We also like the RibbonBar feature and it is logged in our ToDo list, but considering the facts above, we cannot provide an exact time estimate when the RibbonBar will be implemented.

If we start the development of RibbonBar, I will notify you right away.

Rumen

Hello Darren,

We are not yet working on a RadRibbonBar for ASP.NET AJAX. If more people show interest in a similar control we will increase the priority.

Hi,

The requested RibbonBar toolbar is still not offered by RadEditor and its implementation is not planned for Q1 2010, scheduled for March' 2010. The reason for this is that this feature is not so often requested. The implementation of this toolbar requires a lot of work and testing due to the multiple side effects and problems in the different browsers.

Please, see the following code library, which demonstrates how to implement a ribbonbar: Office 2007 Ribbon UI. If you would like you can try to integrate this toolbar with RadEditor using the RadEditor's client-side API. To execute a command of RadEditor you should execute the fire method. You can see a list of RadEditor commands in this article: Introduction to Toolbars.

Rumen

Hi everyone.. I dont think that a RibbonBar is that useful in a Richtexteditor.. however, the inline menu as seen in Office2007 would be nice (the one after marking the text ...) like http://redoxite.ch/reditor/ (ofter selecting some text.. again).

Cheers

Hi Roger,

Thank you for providing a link to this demo.

The inline menu is indeed very nice and useful feature and I logged your feature request in our PITS system. We will consider its implementation for one of the next major editor versions.

I also updated your Telerik points for your feedback.

Best regards,
