    Hello James Greaves,

    Please find below a sample code snippet that shows the needed approach.

    <form id="form1" runat="server">
        <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server">
        <script type="text/javascript">
            function getSelectedTab() {
                var tabstrip = $find('<%= RadTabStrip1.ClientID %>');
        <telerik:RadTabStrip runat="server" ID="RadTabStrip1" SelectedIndex="0">
                <telerik:RadTab runat="server" Text="Root RadTab1">
                <telerik:RadTab runat="server" Text="Root RadTab2">
                <telerik:RadTab runat="server" Text="Root RadTab3">
                <telerik:RadTab runat="server" Text="Root RadTab4">
                <telerik:RadTab runat="server" Text="Root RadTab5">
        <input id="Button1" type="button" value="button" onclick="getSelectedTab()" />

    All the best,

    Thank you!  That is what I needed.  In my case
     var selectedTab = tStrip.get_selectedTab().get_value();
