Behind Every Great Application Is a Developer Who Cares

In honor of World Developer Day, which is celebrated September 16, we tip our hats to the magic of development and the humans who create it.

When people talk about software, they usually talk about the technology. In 2026, we talk about AI, cloud services, programming languages, frameworks and the latest tools that help us build faster than ever before.

But software doesn’t create itself.

Behind every application you use, every website you visit, every game you play and every service that helps you get through your day is a developer who cared enough to build it. Someone saw a problem, imagined a better experience and spent their time and energy bringing that idea to life.

That’s one of the things I’ve always loved about the developer community. Developers are naturally curious people. We’re constantly learning, experimenting and asking, “What if?” We enjoy solving puzzles, but we also care deeply about the people who use the things we create. Whether it’s helping a customer or coworker accomplish a task more easily or contributing to an open-source project, our work is ultimately about helping others.

For me, one of the most rewarding parts of being a developer has been the opportunity to connect with other developers. That’s a big part of why I enjoy live coding so much. The code is just the vehicle. What really matters is the conversation. Whether I’m building something new, experimenting with a feature or debugging a problem in real time, there are always developers sharing ideas, asking questions, offering suggestions and teaching me something along the way. After all these years, that’s what still excites me most about this profession. The technology changes constantly, but the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with smart, passionate people never gets old.

For World Developers Day, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate that human side of software development. The technologies we use will continue to evolve. The languages, frameworks and platforms will change. What won’t change is the passion that drives people to create, innovate and share their work with others.

My Progress colleagues and I asked a group of developers a simple question:

What do you love most about being a developer?

The answers were thoughtful, inspiring and as diverse as the community itself. Some talked about the joy of learning. Others shared how much they enjoy solving problems or collaborating with teammates. A few spoke about the satisfaction of building something that makes someone’s day just a little bit easier.
