Hi,

I am working in SSRS for quite some time. Now i have been given a chance to evaluate Telerik reporting before we go in this direction.

Questions:
1. Unlike SSRS can we move/restructure text boxes in the data panel without having an application layer on top in Telerik reporting?
2. Can we show/hide columns dynamically?
3. Does Telerik has richer controls than SSRS 2008.
4. What are the differences between SSRS and Telerik reporting?
5. Deployment issues! (Say: Does it need report server to deploy reports?)

Please suggest on the aforementioned, as it will help me decide on which technology to use for our reports.

Hi Shailendra,

1. We are not sure what exactly do you have in mind in you first question. Can you please clarify and elaborate a little bit more.

2. If we understand correctly, you are asking about interactive reports. We still lack this functionality but we are working on it at the moment and we should have it for a future release.

3. Telerik Reporting currently supports the following report items: TextBox, PictureBox, Shape, Panel, SubReport and Chart. You can learn more about them here.

4. Telerik Reporting is an embedded reporting engine and can be used in any .NET application, be it ASP.NET or WindowsForms. Telerik Reporting does not depend on Microsoft SQL Server and can be used with any common .NET data source. Telerik Reporting's brand new designer which was introduced with the latest release is much easier and intuitive to use than the SSRS designer. You also get different wizards to help you create your report in no time. Furthemore, all product subscription holders are guaranteed a 24-hour support ticket round-trip. So if you have any difficulties or questions, our technical support will always be there to aid you and get your project going.

There is a fully functional Trial version of Telerik Reporting on our website and we encourage you to download it and play with it to get a true feeling of our product. It comes with some examples that demonstrate some of the features that Telerik Reporting offers. Also, you can check out the online videos that show Telerik Reporting in action.

5. Telerik Reporting does not need a report server to operate. You simply need to distribute the required .NET assemblies with you application and that's it. Telerik Reporting is used just as any other 3rd-party class library that you might be working with, so deployment is straightforward.

Please, do not hesitate to contact us again if you have some other questions or something specific that you would like to ask.

Best wishes,
Ross

I'd have to say stick with SRSS. I have found the current version of telerik reporting VERY buggy. There are issues with the UI, at least one of which still has not been resolved from the last version.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for the feedback.

Could you describe what issues you have found in the latest Q1 2008 version that existed previously? Unfortunately, we were not able to find any bug reports in your account which to give us any clues. Please, give us more details so that we can address them. We have a service pack coming up in a week or two, and if the problem is indeed a bug, and not a feature request, we will do our best to fix it.

We will also appreciate it if you share your opinion on why you find Telerik Reporting very buggy. If you think that it still lacks some features, we will wholeheartedly agree with you. Telerik Reporting was introduced early last year and we are somewhat behind of the other major players, such as SSRS and Crystal Reports, which have been on the market for years. Nevertheless, we are very happy with the way our product is coming along and we are sure that soon we will offer the same, if not more features. Please, share your opinion so that we can start working on what we are still missing.

Kind regards,
Vassil

Good morning Vassil,

I don't have time at the moment to give an in-depth description of some of the issues I've encountered. I'll try and get a write up with screenshots to you guys. One of the issues I can briefly describe is when clicking on a button inside one of the wizards, the focus moves to a different application. It doesn't crash visual studio, just kicks me over to another application such as firefox. I sometimes post under Jim's account as well. Same domain in the email. :)

I've also experienced an entire report become suddenly invisible in the designer, but all objects existed in the code file.

Previewing a dataset using a stored procedure with nullable parameters also has a kink that I'll try to provide a write-up on when time allows.

Thanks for your valueable comment Eric!!

I have been playing around with Telerik Reporting for past 3-4 days. The issues which you have brought up must be valid to its own extent. I sincerely hope that they (Telerik) should try to address those ASAP. If you don't mind, could you please post  as how your issues were resolved.

I believe, the support team is great and they promise to resolve the problems asap unlike Microsoft (No pun intended).

I will keep on updating this thread as and when i finish evaluating Telerik Reporting.

Vassil, the bug was reported back in January, and it was said at the time it was a known issue. Bug report id was: 116317

Thanks for looking into it.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for the pointer. We reviewed the problems reported in this ticket.

With the new report designer introduced in the new version of Telerik Reporting - Q1 2008 - the 1st , and more major, issue with the items outside of its container is obsolete. The new designer does not allow items to go outside its parent. In other words, we consider this issue to be fixed.

The 2nd issue your colleague reported about the Report Wizard (when it is closed the focus goes to another application than VS IDE) still exists. This problem is not critical for Telerik Reporting, nor for VS, so it is with lower priority and we haven't got the chance to work on it yet. Anyway we will do our best to fix it as soon as possible.

We will suggest downloading Q1 2008 and giving it a try. We are sure you will like the improvements we have introduced in it.

Best wishes,

Svetoslav,

Just to clarify, I am the one who reported the issue, but sometimes post under the other person's account since my login was suddenly not associated with the company for some reason, and my client.net showed no purchases, support tickets...etc.

I am using
Q1 2008. Obviously the first issue has been resolved. The second issue (wizard closing), while not major, is something that I feel should be resolved before a major release if it's a known issue. As stated above, there are other issues I have found with Q1 2008 that I will try my best to get a write up to you guys on.

Eric,

I am happy to say that looked into the second problem as soon as I posted my previous reply and I have just fixed the second problem as well. The fix will be available with the upcoming service pack.

Let me know whether I can be of further assistance.

Thanks Svetoslav.

I will try and get you details on the issues I mentioned above, one should be pretty easy with the preview dataset window and nullable parameters in a stored procedure. When you click preview, it forces you to enter a value for each parameter. But if you enter something in each box, delete them, then hit the button again it goes thru.

Sorry if that is unclear. Going from memory here. :)

Hi Eric,

Telerik Reporting depends on the standard .NET data source objects, including the DataSets and does not provide its own data source objects. If I have understood you correctly, you are experiencing some troubles with the DataSet design time support which includes the preview data functionality. Since the DataSource design time support is part of the .NET Framework developed and maintained by Microsoft, I am afraid I cannot help you with this specific issue.

Please, let me know if I have misunderstood your issue.
