As I wanted to improve the performance of my tree when loading a lot of nodes on demand I switched off like suggested the "PersistLoadOnDemandNodes" property.
Unfortunately I didn't think about that then also all the check box functionality probably gets lost.
I didn't investigate further, all I noticed after was that when I do a ClearCheckedNodes(), it just ends up in an endless loop (or at least in a long lasting operation)...
Would be cool if you could intercept those errors in the affected functions.
