Hello,

When extension ASP.NET Core VSExtensions (2019.1.403.1) is installed and active, VS2019 hangs when started from JumpList (rightclick on the vs shortcut in the Taskbar). The only option left is to kill the process.

This problems sometimes occurs when solution is opened from the new start screen, but it happens less frequently.

When disabling the extension, everything is working fine.

Hello Rémy,

We couldn't reproduce this on our side. In order to investigate it further I would ask you to provide us with some more information:
  1. Collect Visual Studio log files:
    1. Open Developer Command prompt for Visual Studio 2019 under Administrative rights.
    2. Execute the command - devenv [Path to solution file] /log %userprofile%\desktop\ActivityLog.xml . This will start Visual Studio and create logs on your Desktop.
    3. Reproduce the problem.
  2. Create a Windows Minidump file. Process Explorer is very convenient for that purpose. It is stand-alone tool which does not require an installation:
    1. Run procexp.exe under Administrative rights.
    2. Reproduce the problem.
    3. In the process pane, locate devenv.exe, right-click on that process and click on Create Dump -> Create Minidump...
    4. *Note the you have to click on Create Minidump... when the problem is available (when Visual Studio is not responding).

Hi Nikolay,

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on VS2017 Community - with "Telerik ASP.NET Core VSExtensions" enabled, any solution I try to open by double-clicking its .sln file in Windows Explorer hangs as soon as VS2017 opens it.  With that extension disabled, there are no issues.

Also like Remy, when I open the solution from the VS Start Page, sometimes it opens properly and sometimes it hangs.

I followed the instructions you gave Remy and I also uploaded the requested files to that shared folder.  You'll find mine inside a Zip file so you can distinguish them from Remy's files.

Hi guys,

I apologize for the late answer.

We have investigated the the dump and log files you provided and there is no indication of Telerik Extensions to be causing the hang. However there might be other things that might cause such behavior:
  1. Another Visual Studio Extension that in combination with Telerik Extensions is causing Visual Studio to hang
  2. An issue with Visual Studio and how it is loading the extensions.

With that said I would ask you to tell us if you have any other Visual Studio extensions installed so we can investigate further.

Hello,

We are still unable to reproduce the issue on our side and so the next thing we can recommend is to report this problem in Visual Studio Developer Community. We are recommending this because, when reporting an issue through Visual Studio it collects several log files that might help Visual Studio support team find what exactly is causing the hang. It will also be important to submit the dumb files you have send to us. Here is an article that shows how to report a problem through Visual Studio.

Hi Nikolay,

Bad news, but contacting Visual Studio was what I did at first. Here is the link : https://www.telerik.com/forums/permalink/M3KdF98f9UWWiKfvN2huGA.

Sadly, the VS Team pointed out a problem with Telerik Extension and asked me to open a ticket here.

By the way, if I disable the Telerik Extensions, I do not experience any hang :-(

Any update ? This is really annoying and the only solution is to desactivate all Telerik Extentions :(

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused, but unfortunately the issue requires much more time in order to be fixed. I can assure you that we are working on it and it is expected to be included in our next release 2019 R3 SP1.

Hi,

I'm writing to let you know that we have applied a fix for the  problem. I would ask you to check that on your side, but before you do that please make sure that All Telerik Visual Studio extensions you have installed are the latest version. In order to do that go to Visual Studio 2019 -> Extensions -> Manage Extensions -> Updates tab(Visual Studio -> Tools -> Extensions and Updates... -> Updates tab for older Visual Studio versions).
