We are running ASP.NET AJAX controls on a VMWare virtual server running Windows Server 2008 R2 with (1) 2.30 GHz CPU and 2 GB RAM.  We have noticed that the website seems to hang each time you click on a new tab or load new data.  Looking at the CPU usage on the server, we have noticed spikes in CPU to 100% that correspond to each click on the client side.  I'd like to know if we need to beef up our server or if we need to optimize our site better.  It seems like we've done a good job of optimizing, we just haven't found hardware requirements for the RadControls and may be missing something there.  Please help!

Thanks!

Hello Adam Gross,

Would you mind elaborating a little bit more on the issue - for example under which browsers the reported spikes can be observed and what controls do you use in the application in question? You can also open a formal support ticket and send us a small sample that demonstrates the problem. This way we will be able to debug it locally and precisely track the cause of the problem.

Depending on the controls used, you can also review the optimization help topics that the different controls provide. For example here is a list of articles for RadGrid:

Client/server grid performance optimizations
Top Performance
RadGrid Overview (chapter “Performance tips and tricks”)
Grid for ASP.NET AJAX (Section “Performance”)

I hope this helps.

All the best,

We are using IE8.  The main RadControls that we use in the site are RadGrid, RadTabStrip, Loading Panel.  I don't really have a sample project that I get pull together.  I'd be happy to let someone remote in and see the behavior.

I guess the main question is, what are you minimum system requirements for a web server running the Telerik RadAjax controls?  I can't find that information anywhere.

Hello Adam Gross,

I believe that the issue in question is not related to your server hardware. Note that Windows 2008 server is supported as stated in the following article:

System requirements

Since you are not able to provide a runnable example, I would suggest that you open a support ticket and send me at least the source code (markup and code behind) of the project. This way I will be able to draw a clear picture of your scenario and provide you more to-the-point resolution. I hope you agree that even if i see the erroneous behavior I would not be much of a help unless I have some insight about the code that causes it.

Meanwhile would you also mind letting me know whether the same behavior is observed in the other supported browsers?

Regards,
Martin

I understand that you say it may not he hardware related.  I think that hardware may help, but may not be the complete solution.  I've been to your system requirement page and it doesn't have the information that I am looking for.  If I was to ask you, "What hardware would you recommend for me to use to host a Telerik based website?", what would the answer be?  The system requirements page just lists the OS options, but I want to know what the hardware specs are.

Also, we don't have any other supported browsers in our environment, just IE8.  Since it's an internal only application, we are only developing for IE8.

See the attached picture for reference.  The spikes in CPU are directly related to each click within the website on a Telerik control.

Hello Adam Gross,

There are no specific hardware requirements to run RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX on windows server 2008. Since this operating system is supported, RadControls should run even with the minimal hardware requirements for this operating system. Additionally you should ensure that your server machine at least meets the hardware requirements for the relevant .NET framework and IIS versions. Please also mind that the server load and responsiveness would in all cases depend on the number of users that are currently hitting your website (or other websites hosted on the same server).

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Martin
