Hi guys,

I think you must be hating me because in the last days I have not done more than boring you with small things, but in the end, everything is to improve what already in essence is good .

There is another (Not especially important this time):

When I have textboxes on page header and detail sections, and i would move to right or left, I can of course select both of them together but when I'll try to move them the only textboxes that will be moved are the ones that they are on the section that i click to drag. If I drag on one of the items of the page header only the items selected on page header are moving, anyway all are selected, the items on page header and the items on detail together.

It forces me to make the work twice, and of course after that review the result to align with the other section.

It's not very important but you should to consider it to the next version along with the moving and resize items with keyboard.

Thanks for you time.

Regards

David Tomás

Hi David,

We highly appreciate your feedback and the good will to make us build one better Telerik Reporting.

This behavior we took from the Windows Forms designer as we consider it standard for a root designer (similar to the Report Designer). If you have selected items from different containers only those from the container where the primary selection is, can be dragged.

You can easily test it if you place for example 2 panels on a form, with one or more buttons inside the panels. Select all buttons and drag any of them. You will see exactly the same behavior - only the buttons from the panel where is the primary selection (the button you have clicked to start the dragging operation) are moved.

All report items are positioned accordingly to its container (parent section for example). Mixing items from different containers will make their positioning on the new container too complex and confusing. Moving items from one container at a time makes their positioning straightforward and easy to use. So we decided to stick with this behavior because it seems most reasonable to us.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
Svetoslav

Hi Svetoslav,

I can appreciate the rationale of following the behaviors from Windows Forms designer.  However, there are some key differences in the requirements of a reporting tool as opposed to a Windows form design tool.  Let me explain...

I will use the example you cited about 2 panels in a Windows form.  Generally speaking, it is NOT important or necessary to line up objects, i.e. labels, text boxes, from two panels in a form.  Generally speaking, the objects within a panel are lined up but not relative to another panel.  However, when one designs a report, it's a different matter.  99% of the time, one must line up the column heading text with the column data.  So, it is therefore NOT sufficient to just follow the behaviors in Windows Forms designer in this case.  Rather, the product needs to go beyond that.

Like David, I was surprised when I first ran into this with Telerik's product.  Certainly, some of your competitors' products support the ability to drag objects across container boundary.  So, I would consider this to be a deficiency, granted not a major issue.

I hope Telerik will improve this feature in future releases.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

You definitely have a point here! We will log this in our bug tracking system, and we will have them in mind while working on the report designer in the future.

All the best,
