help with read only need for Update but not for insert

I have created a grid that will update/insert and delete...  There is one column that I want to be read only for an update but need it for the insert. I have created this column as a GridDropDownColumn... can someone tell me how i can turn it off and on depending on update or if its an insert...

I recommend that you take a look at the Distinguish edit/insert mode on ItemCreated/ItemDataBound help topic to see how to determine the mode of the grid and according to it to set the visibility.
