Given all the known advantages/disadvantages of doing an ASP.NET or a WinForm app, which way would you go if you are building an internal application and don't need the "Hey, I could go to ANY computer and get to the asp.net app!" advantage?  I look at the number of threads in the asp.net forum and then the winform forum and I get the overwhelming sense that most are using asp.net.

It's been about 6 years since I've done any serious coding but I need to get back into the game to modernize myself.  Therefore I may agree to write a fair sized application for a company.  Telerik will enable me to accelerate the development of the app, etc.  Now the choice becomes asp.net or winform?

I gravitate away from from asp.net because that platform just seems to fight you each step of the way.  Things that are simple in winforms are not in asp.net.  Are they truly that way or is because I have not done any significant coding in a while?  It also seems that Telerik is embracing the browser apps more than winforms so that should confirm the continued tried of the industry towards asp.net.

I think I already know the response but if you got YOUR choice would you do the winform or the asp.net?

Hello Michael,

When you want to choose the framework on top of which your applications will be built, the most important question you have to ask yourself is:

Will these apps target desktop or web?

If you answer positively the first part, you should choose RadControls for Winforms/WPF, otherwise you can choose between RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX/Silverlight or Telerik Extensions for MVC.

The preferences for a certain framework should not lay on subjective factors but rather should be determined by the environment when your application will "live". I hope this explanation is helpful to you.

Best regards,

This is an internal app and will be used on desktops.  That does point to winforms but a browswer app could certainly work as well.  I'm more asking about the number of controls and support by Telerik on the different platforms.

Since I could certainly go either way with this app I would be swayed if Telerik was pushing their web platform more than desktop, or if there are far more useful controls in winform, etc.

I just noticed there is a community forum.  I'm going to reform my question and pose it there.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for writing.

The goals that you have to achieve with this application should point to you the technology that should be used. Indeed, your description assumes that you actually want to use WinForms or WPF, although the same goals can be achieved with ASP.NET. Directly to your question, we do not push ASP.NET or WinForms more or less and both are being developed, improved and supported at all times with the same efforts.

I hope you find this information helpful.

All the best,
Stefan
