I have found this in the examples to generate a pdf document from a report:

byte[] buffer = ReportProcessor.Render("PDF", report, null, out mimeType, out extension, out encoding);

"PDF" is passed as a hardcoded argument in this method call. What are the other strings that will work? I found that "HTML" works too, but what about "xls" and "doc"?  These don't seem to work to export to Excel and Word.

Also, will this argument remain a hardcoded string, or will this evolve into another type of argument, like an enumeration, an interface, ...?

Hello Michel,

To render a report you should use any of the available exporting formats. Currently we don't have Excel and Word rendering extensions but they will be ready in the coming updates. To get the list of the available renderers you can use the  ReportProcessor.ListRenderingExtensions()  method.

The first parameter of the ReportProcessor.Render() method is the format to export a given report to. Since the rendering extensions are pluggable to the report engine and you can have an arbitrary set of renderers (you can even write your own) we cannot change the type of the format parameter to a more specific enum that requires its fields to be available to the compiler in compile time.

So there are two possible approaches - you should know exactly what renderer to use and its format or lookup its name using the ReportProcessor.ListRenderingExtensions()  method.

All the best,

Hi Svetoslav,

Any idea when the Word and Excel extension will be ready?

We've baught this tool specifically for those two possibilities, and since the overview of the product mentionned the ability to export to Word, we assumed it could export to Excel as well.  However, we find that none of them are available.

Thanks,

Manon

Hello Manon,

To our great regret we won't be able to finish the Excel export for the upcoming release in the mid September. The short time frame for this release forced us to postpone it for the next version, which is due in mid December. In case this feature is vital for you, we can add you to our beta testers' list and send you a pre-release version of Telerik Reporting v2. Let us know what you think.

Best wishes,

Are you guys completely comitted to including export to Excel in the December release? My customers are clamoring for it as well. And I thought it was going to be in the initial release too.

Hello rh,

Yes, we believe the Excel export will be ready for the version due at the end of the year. We're confident that Excel is one of the most important features of a reporting engine, but developing such is not an easy task. There are several formats out there and only the latest is public, the oldest being binary (pre-2003), then there is 2003's XML, and the newest is Office Open XML - MS Office 2007. Obviously, it will be easier for us to support the latest one, as we have enough information for it.

I would like to take the advantage of this forum thread and ask what is the format that will serve you guys best? Have your customers moved to Office 2007 already, are there a few machines with older Office versions? We will very much appreciate your feedback on the topic.

Kind regards,
Svetoslav

I would recommend supporting 2003 and up. There are many, many small and meduim businesses that haven't yet seen the need/benefits to upgrade to 2007 and IMO probably won't see the need to until MS stops supporting 2003.

Hello Svetoslav,

I will second rh on supporting the 2003 version of Office and up.

From the point of view of big corporations (in our case anyway), we're often behind at least two versions simply because upgrading 800+ employee's stations is a huge undertaking that involves a lot of resources and quite a bit of planning, not to mention the monetary side of it... and that's not counting the same amount of sales representatives that are in the field and keep an office at home - these have to be gathered for a special event where we usually setup an IT Upgrade post where everyone can drop their laptops at the beginning of the day and pick them up at the end of the day.  Suffice it to say, we don't do this very often, so we keep the "working" versions of Windows and Office in play as long as possible.  For instance, I just can't see us upgrading to Vista, with all the bugs Microsoft still has to work out.  Computers have become an essetial tool in our business, as much as a screwdriver is to a mechanic, and we need them to be in excellent working order, in all aspects, hence the use of old software versions.

I know it's a drag, on a developper's point of view.  However, this is the sad reality of the business, and we have to keep it in mind in all our developments.  As long as Microsoft insists on releasing flawed software, this will be an issue.

Thanks for your understanding,

Manon

Guys,

Thank you very much for the feedback. We just want to make sure what Excel format we should provide first. Anyway we'll do our best to implement both the old binary (1st) and then the new Open Office XML (2nd) formats.

Other feedback is welcome as well.

Hey guys,

You can export to a CSV file. They open fine in Excel. This might be a workaround for whoever requires the data in excel.

R.

Hi telerik's,
i would like to know which is the status of word (doc and rtf) exporting functions. I looked around a little but it seems not to be yet available even it has been mentioned sometimes. In my company we are using CR, but my colleagues that has to work on it find it frustrating; the only reason for keeping it is its word exporting capabilities that are mandatory for us. As soon as you have this i think we could be very glad to jump to telerik Reporting.

Best regards,
Simone

Hello Simone,

Export reports in Rtf format is in our schedule. We plan to introduce this feature in Telerik Reporting 2008 Q1, scheduled to be released in mid April.

Hi Hrisi,
thanks for your kind answer but what about Doc format? Is that planned too or we should wait the next release?

Hi guys,

Right now we just have started developing the RTF rendering extension. The RTF format offers  everything we need to display a report; can be edited in all MS Word versions and in contrast to the binary MS Word formats it is open (that is there is a publicly available specification). And this does not mean the we have dropped the DOC format at all. We have plans to add a number of export formats in the future but up until now the only scheduled for development and shipping is the RTF.

We will appreciate if you share with us why do you prefer the DOC format to the RTF (since both can be edited with MS Word; moreover the RTF is supported by a number of non-Windows applications). In case you prefer the DOC which kind you and your clients would use most - the binary (aka MS Word 97), the XML (MS Word 2003) or the latest Office Open XML (MS Word 2007).

Your feedback on the DOC formats or any other format you like to have in the export list is welcome.

Regards,
Svetoslav

The original question was what are the values for the out of the box supported formats. We know there is "PDF" but what are the others. Please post those values and why aren't they in the documentation?!?!
