The Nested GroupRenderMode is the older one. The newer Flat mode is an entirely new virtualization mechanism that was developed to address some of the known problems reproduced with the Nested mode. You can take a look at the Grouping Modes topic for more information on this matter.
As to your question, the Nested mode is kept as the default one, so that no breaking changes are introduced.
