Ok, so every couple of days or so I'll fire up my VS 2008 and once I get my solution opened I find out that there is no longer the Telerik tab in the controls and I have to close out of all my stuff and re-register the controls in VS 2008. Happens ALL THE TIME and is getting incredibly annoying. What is going on here? How can I have the controls registered so that I don't have to keep re-registering them every couple of days??

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

Unfortunately we cannot exclusively control the VS toolbox since it is open for all 3rd party applications. If another application (or the user) resets the toolbox, the Telerik tab will disappear. We have already made a stand-alone executable (Start Menu --> Programs --> telerik --> RadControls for ASPNET AJAX Q3 2008 --> Register RadControls for ASPNET AJAX Q3 2008 items in the Visual Studio toolbox), which registers the toolbox items, so users can manually populate the VS toolbox.

Also, note that the items are inserted per user. This means that if you log in with a different windows user and open Visual Studio, the telerik items will not be in the toolbox by default.

Sincerely yours,
Paul

There is nothing resetting the toolbox. My other "Custom" tabs remain and do not dissappear (AJAX Toolkit etc.). I am the only user on the machine. I know I can manually run the .exe to populate the toolbox but it is very frustrating to have to open up a huge solution, find out that the telerik controls are removed, close out the solution, run the .exe and then re-open the solution. Especially when it is close to every other day. Any other ideas? What could possibly be resetting the toolbox (and if the toolbox was actually reset wouldn't my other custom tabs be removed also and not just the Telerik ones??)

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

Could you please elaborate on the following question:

  • exact version of VS2008
  • does your application/project uses .NET 2.0 or .NET 3.5
  • please start VS2008 without opening any project, expand the toolbox and check the 'Show All' option (see attached screenshot). Do you see any Telerik controls in the toolbox now (though grayed-out)?
  • Do you have any antivirus / security software installed on your machine?

Greetings,
Paul

Thanks for the reply, here is the info you asked for:
  • Visual Studio Team System 2008, Version 9.0.30729.1 SP, .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
  • All projects use .NET 3.5
  • The Telerik controls ARE in the toolbox if I do the show all THIS TIME, I would assume that tihs is not always the case since after opening a project at least 50% of the time the controls are gone.
  • Running NOD32 antivirus network version

Thanks again!

Hello Joe,

Nothing unusual indeed. OK, you can try to manually add the controls to the VS toolbox. Also, you can try to reset the settings of Visual Studio; you could use command line: "Start" --> "Run" --> "devenv /ResetSettings".  For additional information, please check Devenv Command Line Switches.

In addition, please note there is a known issue with VS 2008's toolbox and some wireless devices. Please refer to this blog post for more details.
