I uninstalled ASP.NET AJAX Q1 2009 and then installed the newest Q3 2009 release. Now my existing projects will not compile. Your help file talks about a "Project Upgrade Wizard" that is supposed to fix my existing projects but I can't access it. The help file says:

The Upgrade Wizard (started by using the Telerik > RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX > Upgrade Wizard menu item) has two main purposes:

  • Check and retrieve the latest available RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX release;
  • Change the version of RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX the project uses.

I want to do bullet item #2 but can't because the "Upgrade Wizard" menu item does not exist! The "Telerik > RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX" menu items are there in Visual Studio but the third "Upgrade Wizard" menu item is not there. Instead I have a "Convert to Telerik Web Application". The project I have open has already been converted the older Telerik Q1 2009 version. It's like your menus can't figure out that my projects have already been converted and instead need to upgraded!

How do I open the "Project Upgrade Wizard"???

Also, I'm running Visual Studio 2008 Pro. Attached to this post is a screen shot of Visual Studio 2008 with the menus opened up. Notice that the project I have open has the Telerik DLL added to Solution Explorer (right hand side of picture) so the project was converted months ago. However the Telerik menu at the top is missing the Project "Upgrade Wizard" item that your help file says should be there.

Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg,

There are some changes in the Telerik menu.

The Upgrade Wizard menu item used to become visible when a project contained RadControls references. Starting with the latest release the validity of your RadControls references is checked for the Upgrade Wizard menu item to get shown.

You can now use the Convert to Telerik Web Application menu item to fix your references and resume your work as per usual.

If you want to perform your upgrades using the Upgrade Wizard you would need to keep your projects compilable. That can be accomplished by keeping the previous version of RadControls installed while you upgrade all of your projects.

FYI, we are preparing an article describing the behavior of the Telerik menu. I will be available soon as a sticky post in the forums.

Sincerely yours,
Andrey

Audrey,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately neither of these suggestions work.

(1) The Convert to Telerik Web Application menu item gives an error message because the old Q1 2009 version does not exist. I have attached a screen shot of the error.

(2) The Q3 install program refuses to install if the Q1 release is on my PC. This makes it impossible to have both versions on my PC at the same time. I don't have a screen shot of the error message but the Q3 installer literally said some thing like "you must uninstall this older version before I can proceed". Because of this error I had to go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall Q1. After that I was able to successfully install Q3.

How can I get both versions installed at the the same time? That was always my prefered way to handle things. Would it help if I installed the Q1, Q2 and Q3 releases in sequence? Maybe the fact that I skipped a release is confusing the installer?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I was able to reproduce the problem you have described and indeed, this is an issue in the VS Extensions for ASP.NET AJAX. The good news is that a fix will be available for the next internal release.

Fortunately there is a workaround for that behavior, you just need to remove the Telerik.Web.UI reference. I've attached a video, please review it and let us know if further help is needed.

We do appreciate your feedback and we updated your Telerik points.

Best wishes,
Plamen

I have a related, yet slightly different problem after upgrading to th Q3 release.

My RAD Controls menu in VS2008, for existing web projects, shows only templates and related options.

I created a new project, and it has the "Configure" and "Upgrade Wizard" options, as expected.

I think I may have missed a step along the way with earlier versions of RAD, where the site is upgraded to a "Telerik RADControls Application".

I tried the fix mentioned in your video, but I have no references to delete.

Hello Tom,

The options available in the Telerik menu are related to your current selection in the Solution Explorer.

The "Configure" and "Upgrade Wizard" options should be available to you when the currently selected project is a Telerik-Enabled project and the currently selected item in the Solution Explorer is the project itself.

FYI, a description of the Telerik Menu's behavior can be found in the Telerik Menu post in our blogs.

Let me know if that helped.

Yes, Andrey, you are absolutely correct.

Problem solved, and the link provided was very clear.

I feel bad about missing that essential part of the documentation, but I do see that it was posted recently, and I was on vacation that week!

Great product, getting better every release.

I'm having a similar problem using vs2005. I have just installed 2009 Q3. My project uses 2009 Q2.  However, I have a Web Site Project rather than a Web Application Project. I do not get the "Convert to Telerik Web Application" item in my Telerik Menu. Is there any automatic way for me to automatically upgrade my project? If not, what might be the easiest manual approach?

As a test, I added a (Q3) RadSiteMap to my project. I was prompted to replace my telerik dlls, which I did. App seems to work but a text msg was added to my markup that says

 <strong>Convert to Telerik Web Application</strong></td

Thx,
Hugo

Hi Hugo,

Could it be that you had the <strong>Convert to Telerik Web Application</strong></td> markup in the clipboard and you pasted that to the file? The toolbox drag and drop does not deal with markup addition other than the default control registration...

As per the reference update, once you have the Telerik.Web.UI assembly referenced by your project, you don't have the "Convert" menu item anymore, as the project is already "converted" to use the RadControls. In this case, to change the referenced Telerik.Web.UI assembly with a newer version, you should use the Upgrade Wizard menu item. The Telerik Menu post could shed some more details about that.

I hope that helps.

Kind regards,
