Since this release completely breaks backward compatibility, is there anything I can refer to for tips/techniques for upgrading?  Some of the items have been obsoleted and therefore tell me the replacement method.  A few others I've been able to figure out through experimentation or by looking at the examples.  There are some where the feature has been commented out in the example (see AutoCompleteMode and DropDownStyle of a grid combobox column) and it's not obvious how that functionality has been replaced. I would love a list of breaking changes and the replacement way to do the same thing.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin Marsh,

Thank you for the feedback.

Currently, not all the features that are present in the old RadGridView are implemented in the new version. This is the case with AutoCompleteMode and DropDownStyle. We will consider including both for the Q1 2008.

We also have plans to introduce a list of tips/techniques which will help you to swiftly move to the new RadGridView.

If you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

When do you plan to provide the list of tips/techniques?  We're willing to take on a "beta" version of the list even if it isn't complete.

Hi again Kevin,

It has always been our priority to provide full release notes with every release. We know how troublesome  breaking changes can be for our customers and we do everything in our power to limit such changes. If, however, they are inevitable, we try to notify our customers well in advance that compatibility is going to break so that they can plan their time and upgrade process. In addition, with every release we provide a complete list of all breaking changes and ways to fix them. As an example you can see the Q3 2007 release notes where we have marked all Breaking Changes in red. The upcoming Q1 2008 version will follow the same procedure.

Back in December I wrote a couple of extensive blogs on the new GridView version and what to expect from it (there is a link to the first part of the blogs in the Beta Forum). The blogs also cover some of the breaking changes we are going to introduce. In the Beta Forum we attached an extensive Known Issues and Backwards Compatibility list for everyone's consideration.

RadGridView is not backwards compatible and we realize that this is a big issue for all of you. We will try to make the upgrade process as seamless as possible by updating this list further for the official version, and by including instructions on how to fix any backwards compatibility issues that may arise.

In case you find anything that is not listed in the files above, please let us know and we will send you instructions on how to overcome the problem.

Do not hesitate to contact us back if you need additional assistance.

Thanks Vassil.

I read your blog posts early this year before the beta was released, therefore we were expecting a lot of the changes we saw.  What we needed was a simple list of breaking changes and the equivalent "new" way to solve the problem.

As far as additional things we've found that would be helpful to include for future release notes:

  • With the new organization/API, getting from a Group Row Info to the correspoding Data Group to be able to get the Child Data Rows.
  • Grouping in general was completely refactored with the data rows completely separate.  Although a great change, this has caused a lot of rework in our code.  Examples/suggestions would have been most helpful.
  • The new way to add Filters on a column.  (Went from one line to several with checks for nulls).
  • MasterGridViewTemplate.CurrentColumn no longer contains UniqueName.  Same with ColumnInfo off of a Cell Element.  Type change?
  • Changes in class/type means code has to change.  Example: GridViewColumn to GridViewDataColumn, etc.  A list would be real useful.
  • The way we handle a cell/row double-click changed (Or there is a bug).
  • DataEditFormatString and DataTextFormatString were replaced by FormatString, but we had different values for the two.
  • RadComboBox no longer contains a HostedControl.  Members of HostedControl now exposed directly.
  • UpdateView no longer provided/needed.  This is good, but all code using it breaks.
  • Items missing completely.  See original post.
  • See posts in this forum.

Hello Kevin Marsh,

Thank you for the valuable feedback.

We recognize we need to provide more information in the breaking changes in the RadGridView, and we very much appreciate your time in sharing with us the kind of information you'd like to see there. Your points will be included in the Q1 2008 Breaking Changes list and in our Help Documentation as well.

If you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

All the best,
Nikolay
