A client is keen to use a custom theme that does not closely match any of the out-of-the-box themes.

a. How can I easily modify an existing Telerik theme to create a new one?
b. Can I make standard MS WPF controls adopt such a theme?
c. Or, will some 3rd party theme provider also work with Telerik controls?

Many thanks for any guidance,

James.

Hi jas,

First of all, please accept my apologies for the delayed answer.

a. How can I easily modify an existing Telerik theme to create a new one?

There are two possible options. One of them is to modify one of our themes in Blend, the other is to create your custom theme, based on an existing Telerik one.  We have our 2010 Q1 Release this week and it is not a good idea to send you a sample project based on our 2009 Q3 Relese binaries. We had a significant face-lifting of all of our themes and we are sure you will enjoy our new themes. We made them more consistent and fancy.

Is it convenient for you that we send you a sample project as soon as our release becomes fact?

b. Can I make standard MS WPF controls adopt such a theme?

Actually we have some of the MS WPF controls styled according our themes - RadioButton, CheckButton, Button, RepeadButton, ScrollViewer, Textbox , PasswordBox, Listbox.

c. Or, will some 3rd party theme provider also work with Telerik controls?

As far as I know there are no such 3rd party themes provider for our controls.

Hope this helps.

All the best,
Sia

Thanks for your interesting reply.

You suggest modifying an existing theme - I presume you mean some xaml file with the styles included. Where are these files located? - and can I edit one and save with a different name and use that for Telerik controls?

A sample project would be much appreciated asap as this is a crucial issue at the moment.

Thanks

James.

Hello jas,

Modifying xaml files is exactly what I meant. I will send them to you, but as I said it was not reasonable before our release.

Could you please open a formal support ticket, so that I can send you the sample project.

Kind regards,
Sia

Hello Sia!
1. I would be very interested in that sample project also. Do I need to open a support ticket too for this?
2. I've just checked this Q1 2010 beta and I've noticed many new nice features, but unfortunately the "face-lifting" is kind of interfering with my project in an unwanted direction for my case. The thing I miss the most is the black background for a chart with "Black office" theme - because I really need a "night" mode of my application. So what can I do to have it back and still get the most of the Q1 2010 release?

Thank you!

Hi RoxanaC,

Please open a support ticket and I'll send you a sample project which demonstrates how to get a closer appearance of RadChart to the previous Office_Black theme.

Sincerely yours,
Hristo

...and by the way
why did you changed the office black theme for chart to have the light background?
I mean there is almost no difference now from office black and office silver look of a chart because of this.
It was so nice before! And I really think that a darker look would be very appealing (and it was actually) ... well don't mention the Vista theme for chart, by darker I meant black actually.

Hi RoxanaC,

The facelift for all 6 built-in themes was triggered after a lot of feedback concerning inconsistencies in the visual appearance and theme management among our controls. A lot of customers were not happy with the fact that Office_Black had nothing in common with Office Silver and Blue. This led to unifying the visual appearance of some of the themes which is the case for our Office themes.

All the best,

Hello Hristo!
Thank you for your reply!
Just as a small note...
Don't get this wrong please, but I really hope that I wont have to review all my code every time you have a new release, trying to make my project look as it was initially designed, it really get's frustrating when you have to interrupt the development for spending at least one week for redesigning everything.
And I've noticed that there are other costumers not that happy with some of these changes
(e.g "WPF Themes Issues" thread in GridView)

Best wishes!
Roxana
