Hi,

I'd like to offer a customer the ability to build gantt charts 'on the fly' without requiring that they know the start and end date of each task.   I understand that 'start' and 'end' are mandatory fields of a gantt task however our users like to build out plans iteratively and may not know the start and end dates of a task until late in the planning process.

I have tried displaying tasks without start and end dates and they do indeed show up as list items in the tree however the calendar then defaults the earliest visible task date to the machines current day -  In which case other tasks that do have start dates prior to 'today' are displayed incorrectly.

It looks like the widget is close to supporting this functionality.  Is there a way to make this work that I have missed in the documentation?  If not I'd like to suggest that it would be a great feature to include in your next release.

Regards,

Jim Karavias

Hello,

As you pointed out, the start and end fields of the task are indeed mandatory in order to properly display a task, and we don't support creating tasks without these fields.

Could you point to a gantt chart implementation where such a feature exists, so that we can take a look?

Hi Bozhidar,

I am not aware of a UI library that offers this however our customer is using smartsheet which does support this.  Smartsheet is overkill for their use case so we'd like to offer a custom solution with a much smaller set of functionality.

I should point out that what I am doing is strictly displaying task data extracted from another application.  It would be useful if I could display tasks missing start and end dates without the widget generating default milestones for them in the calendar.  I would not expect tasks entered interactively with the widget to be accepted without start and end dates however.

Regards,

Jim

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We will take them into consideration. However at the moment this scenario remains unsupported.

Thanks Bozhidar,

I understand.  Excuse my persistence but is there then some way to insert lines into the task grid without it being considered a task at all, aside from modifying the DOM after the chart is rendered?

Jim

Hi,

The TreeList and Timeline are tied to the same datasource, where each record is considered a task, and it's not possible to add a task only to one of them.
