When trying to complete the "hello world" section of the self paced demo in VS 2008, I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when I create the Telerik report item.
I did this sucessfully in VS 2005. The error seems to be specific to VS 2008 and happens if I try VB or C#.
I am experienced at report writing but new to .NET.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am afraid we're going to need more info on your scenario. Here are our questions:
- what is the OS you're using
- what version of VS 2008 do you use? Note that express editions are not supported.
- describe the steps you take prior receiving the error. We want to know how to reproduce this locally.
- where/how do you get this error? Does the error appear in designer (VS exception) or runtime?
- have you tried this on another machine and what is the result?

Thank you for your response. Here is the additional information you requested.
- what is the OS you're using
XP on the problem machine and the one that works
- what version of VS 2008 do you use? Note that express editions are not supported.
Professional
- describe the steps you take prior receiving the error. We want to know how to reproduce this locally.
Simply create the project as described in the tutorial. As stated in first note in the thread, the error happens when adding the Telerik report item
- where/how do you get this error? Does the error appear in designer (VS exception) or runtime?
See the above answer
- have you tried this on another machine and what is the result?
It works on my home machine with XP and VS 2005 professional
Thank you again for your time and I hope this gives you enough info to reproduce the steps if not the error.
I was hoping it would turn out to me a missing declaration or something.

Hi John,
I'm sorry to say but we have not been able to replicate the error. Your first post was a big vague and I hoped that my questions would help in pinpointing whatever it is wrong, however adding the Telerik Report item to the class library is a very basic step and if this would throw an error we would be swarming with support inquiries right now as a lot of developers are using VS2008 for their tasks.
Our suggestion is to re-install VS2008 and Telerik Reporting and see if that makes a difference. Also trying this on VS2008 on another machine would probably yield successful.
Sincerely yours,
Steve

I had the same issue with VS 2010 and Q3 2010 Reporting.
I had been experimenting with the inbuilt MS Report viewer and Crystal Reports. Removing any references to these in web.config sorted it out.

Hi Clive,
Although we were not able to replicate this, we appreciate your input for other community members that might get the same problem.
