How can I restore the "default" location of all floating windows when restoring the docking layout from the saved XML? That is, windows can be floated and arranged in any configuration, then saved - however, on restore any floating windows will be re-docked back to the XAML defined location for that panel.

I think we have the right example for you. You can take a look at the SaveLoadLayout SDK example in our GitHub repository. The example demonstrates how Save/Load layout functionality works in the RadDocking control. When you run the project you can make several panes in floating panes and save the layout. Then you can change their location and load the last saved XML string. The panes are positioned to their last saved location.
