In general, the Kendo UI PivotConfigurator is designed to use the first child field when a root item is dropped over the columns, rows or measures dimension sections. In the case of the client cube (binding to a flat data), the root items contains the dimension field information and that is why they can be dropped over the dimension sections.
Could you elaborate a bit more what exactly is the issue you are experiencing?
