We have recently implemented Telerik Report Server on an Azure virtual machine with the following specs:

  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 2 CPUs
  • SQL Server Express installed

We haven't yet connected it to our Azure SQL Database, but we are experiencing significant performance issues while simply browsing through the interface or running sample reports (browsing 30s/page, reports 60s+/report). The entire system feels very slow, despite having minimal data or reports set up.

Could you advise on any diagnostics or optimizations we can perform to resolve the slow performance? Are there specific configurations within the Report Server or SQL Server Express that could be causing bottlenecks, given our current setup?

Any guidance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Doug Rixmann

Hi Doug,

I have already replied to the same questions asked by you in a Support Ticker. I am providing my reply also here, so other users who may experience the same could benefit from it:

Do you use the Report Server for the .NET Framework or the Report Server.NET?

We are not aware of performance issues with the specified version 10.2.24.924, where we introduced performance improvements related to the Report Server Storage.

You may use the approaches described in the following KB articles to obtain more details:

Here are also the System Requirements and the guidance on the IIS Configuration.

You may also use a database profiler and other environment-specific tools like Event Viewer, etc. to gather more details on the issue.

So I finally found that by switching the Storage configuration to  File system rather than SQL Server that the performance is finally what I would expect. Performance was bad with both local SQL Express and Azure SQL Server. Not sure why.

Hello Doug,

With our latest release, we introduced improvements in the Reporting/Report Server REST Service SQL Storage. I suggest trying the latest Report Server version and testing whether the improvements will fit your expectations.
