Paging doesnt work until after sort or filter

When my grid load the paging at the bottom just says 1, but if i sort or filter the paging works. Is there code i can call to update the paging

I tried $("#grid").data("kendoGrid").refresh();
and $("#grid").data("kendoGrid").dataSource.Refresh();

neither work
