Hi Keen,
The Q1 2013 release only has some CSS styling for such notifications (badges). Since they are not officially supported, some additional styling may be required for some platforms.
Additionally the current internal builds and later - the service pack - have and will have official badge support and Button, ButtonGroup and TabStrip methods for updating them.
