Hello,

I noticed  that you are planning to add a new feature in Reporting 2011, that allows connecting to an XML Data Source. My question is: would be also possible to connect to a Sharepoint list using this new Data Source type?
If not, then what is the way to access a list in Sharepoint, I mean see the fields in designer and be able to drag and drop these fields on the report?

(Note: there are some articles on the web describing this XML data source technique to connect to a Sharepoint list but I didn't have too much success using it as it doesn't seem to allow passing parameters)

Thank you,

M. R.

Hello M. R.,

The RoadMap shows only our intentions about the product development, but it does not specify or guarantee that a feature would be present in the next release. In this line of thought there would not be an XML DataSource component for Q1 2011. However we are currently working on a better out of the box integration with SharePoint 2010 and one of the goals is a SharePoint Datasource component. Thus we will appreciate if you elaborate further on your expectation about such component and what kind of reports you are after to create from the SharePoint List data.

Generally to access SharePoint data from third party applications you have to use the
Microsoft.SharePoint.Client and Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime assemblies. You can get those assemblies from the SharePoint's server GAC folder. More information is available in the Creating a Basic SharePoint Foundation Client Application.

Best wishes,

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your feedback. Would be great to have a Sharepoint DataSource that allows connecting to a Sharepoint list. But does it support parameters, filters, etc? I need to create rather complicated reports that need these features.

Best regards,
M. R.

Hi M. R.,

Once the SharePoint DataSource is ready, it will support Parameters. One of the reasons to create our own DataSource component is to support Parameters for filtering the data out of the box. Still even without a specialized DataSource component you can use Report Parameters and Filter the data on a data item level.
