Is it possible to use id and parentId to build the diagram instead of using a list of children objects in each node?

Hello, Kamal,
Currently, the supported approach is using the items structure as shown in the documentation and the demos:
http://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/diagram/index
https://docs.telerik.com/kendo-ui/controls/diagrams-and-maps/diagram/overview#configuration-Data
If the desired result is id and parentId as in the TreeList widget, I can suggest submitting a feature request in our feedback portal and based on its popularity we may implement it in a future release:

Regards,
Stefan
