Exception adding any control

I was prompted to download a new version, did so.

Created a new project using option one from the dropdown. Could not add any controls to the default form. I thought it was strange that it said [Download] but tried any ways.

Next I created a new project with option 2, worked fine.

So my question is, how do I use option one marked as [Download] even though I already downloaded it and saw zero errors?

Hello Karen,

This happens because the version referenced in the current project is different than the version used for the toolbox. Detailed information is available here:  Failed to create component design time exception.

If there was a Visual Studio opened during the installation the toolbox might not be updated and you may need to reinstall the suite.

Hello,

When I opened VS2017 I was prompted to perform an update and closed VS2017 before starting the install. Opened VS2017, created an new project at which point I got the error. When I return home I will try the solution provided.

Hi Karen,

The Visual Studio extension notifies you when there is a new version available for download. You are not obligated to install it right at this moment. Please note that upgrading the suite does not upgrade any existing projects and they should be upgraded after that.

I often turn off the Internet when I work at Visual Studio, and then just sync. It is more convenient because there are problems, like yours.

Hi Jack,

The extension notifies you but you are not obligated to install the new version. In fact, the notifications can be disabled from the extension settings (see attached).
