Define schema: total when unknown count in json

Hi, Can anyone please let me know how can I define schema: total when I have the following JSON data coming from a web service: (want to implement server paging)

    {
        "fname": "john",
        "lname": "Lane"
    },
    {
        "fname": "Kim",
        "lname": "William"
    }............................// huge data
]

That should be rather straight forward I think

1.total: function ( data ) {
2.        return data.length;
3.     }
