I have a report that is 7.5 inches wide but the details section expands at runtime even if it (the details section) is not visible. There is a warning in the designer that the report is too wide to fit on the page. I'm using version Q2 2012 SP1. Is there a way to limit the width of the details section?

The designer warning about the page being too wide was due to the left and right page margins being too wide. The problem with the details section remains.

The underlying cause of my issue was that I had a subreport that was 6 inches wide but in the main report it was sized to 4 inches wide. So it fit at design time but at runtime it would expand to the original size. This does not answer the original question but it does solve the problem. My guess is that there is not a way to force the report to be a certain width regardless of the contents.

Hello Richard,

You have guessed right that there is no way to limit the report width in design time. That is due to the fact that you may need a bigger surface when you are creating your reports in order to have space to move around items; once you are done you can just reduce the width of the report to the desired one.

When you run the report there are two views - interactive and print preview. In the interactive view the report can be as wide as the widest item (for example a Crosstab can be much wider in run time than it is in design time). In print preview the maximum width and height are defined by the size of the page (which is defined using the PageSettings property of the report).
