Changing the defaultValue

I would like to change the defaultValue of a field in my datasource dynamically, based on user input.

Am I right to presume that currently this is not possible?

I would like to know this as well.  I have tried e.model.Version = 8; and e.model.defaultValues.Version = 8 and it affects the subsequent new record.  I need to be able to modify the current new record.
