We currently use a product called Stimulsoft reporting. We have various issues with it and i'm looking around at alternatives. A few questions I have are:

- Does Telerik reporting have a preview window I could embed in a windows form?
- Does Telerik reporting have a designer i could embed in my windows form app?
- Does Telerik reporting enable .NET behind it's reports?
- Can reports be saved out to external report files that can easily be distributed?

Many thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thank you for contacting us and your interest in Telerik Reporting. Up to your questions:
  • Our Designer has two preview modes - Image and Html Preview. However the preview windows can only be used while in the VS IDE and working with the report designer. They are not available in runtime, where you can use our win/web report viewers to show the report on a win/web form.
  • If you're referring to end-user designer i.e. where your users are the ones creating the reports via some designer without need to have VS IDE installed on their machines, then the answer is no. It is in our TODO list, but we cannot engage with a specific timeframe for this feature.
The answer to questions #3 and #4 are contained within our "cover" page available here. Here is a quote:
"Telerik Reporting is a lightweight .NET reporting solution. It can be easily embedded in Windows Forms and WebForm applications and supports data exports to all popular file formats such as PDF, Excel, RTF, TIFF, etc."

Hope these help.

All the best,
Steve

Two more questions on top of this really; You talk about having VS installed on a client box? could the user use the express version of visual studio as a way to keep client costs down?

When i talk about external files I really mean can the reports be saved out to individual distributable files that a client could use to report with??

Hi Rob,

I think I've been misunderstood. In my second point as a reply to your second question "Does Telerik reporting have a designer i could embed in my windows form app?" the answer is no. The Visual Studio designer is the only designer available for creating the reports and they cannot be created/modified outside of VS IDE. As noted in our system requirements page, VS Express editions are not supported due to limitations of the IDE.
When i talk about external files I really mean can the reports be saved out to individual distributable files that a client could use to report with?? - the answer is again no. The reports can currently only be edited with the help of VS IDE.
