Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends is an annual report that is highly anticipated in the tech industry. The 2014 report was announced at the 2014 Code Conference and it continues to emphasize the rising importance of mobile in our everyday lives. As smartphone and tablet adoption is continuing to grow, the importance of delivering rich mobile experiences is becoming more prevalent.

The market is reacting to the need for rich mobile experience with a shift from multipurpose mobile apps towards standalone and single purpose mobile apps. Single purpose apps aim to deliver the best user experience for a specific task rather than a number of tasks. The best example of this shift is Facebook's recent efforts to create a standalone messaging app by requiring its users to download Facebook Messenger to chat on mobile devices. Facebook has also announced the launch of Paper app which aims to deliver the best reading experience of News Feed stories and articles about the user's favorite topics.

There are a number of other valuable insights in this report. Below are the 5 most important insights:

Over 30% Of All Mobile Users Are Now Smartphone Users

This number was less than 10% at the end of 2010. Smartphone adoption has skyrocketed, going from less than 10% to over 30% in the past 3 years. People are buying more smartphones and less feature phones.

Global Tablet Shipments Increased 52% Just In 2013

Global tablet shipments have surpassed Notebook and Desktop shipments. Though existing tablet owners are not upgrading their tablets as frequently as smartphones, there is still room for significant growth in the tablet market.

25% Of Total Web Usage Is Done On Mobile

Compared to 14% share from a year ago this year 25% of page views were associated with mobile devices. People are increasingly using their smartphones and tablets to access information.

Smartphones are Most Viewed Medium Across the Globe

When compared to TV, Laptops and Tablets, Smartphones dominate with the highest number of daily screen minutes. This trend is observed across the world.

Multi-Screen Viewing is on the Rise

Majority of users are using additional devices while watching TV and a big chunk of these users are shopping online. This opens big opportunities for second screen promotions on TV ads.
