White Background, need to force black checkmark

I've been looking through the forums, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make a black checkmark when using a white border.  I found an example written in 2012, but apparently something has changed, as I can't get it to work in my project.  Can someone show an updated way to accomplish this?

Hi Ryan,

Extracting the default checkbox style and modifying it is the way to go. Could you please specify what kind of difficulties are you facing while doing this?
