[Solved] MVC Extensions Roadmap

Ive been watching your developments in the MVC area with keen interest. Your competitors (not really - as they're not half as professional) are currently increasing their offering around MVC and are requesting payment for the components. Some good - some very poor - partly very expensive.

Telerik has decided to keep the extensions aunder the "Open Source" umbrella,  but please consider that:

• There are certain companies and individuals out there that respect your high level of professionality and are prepared to pay for the programming you have done. Im not adverse to open source yet prefer a professional solution with support.
• You have an excellent ASP product group. Your competitors are allready offering work arounds on their component offerings for MVC. You have a head start, please please use it.....
• If I use the Editor from company X, the open source Capcha, the grid from Telerik etc etc. then I will end up hacking - which I want to avoid as far as possible.

A Package with all of the ASP components stripped down to be MVC conform, combined with Visual Studio Extensions, Visual style builder and the Web UI Testing Studio may do the trick. You may have a slow start but it will pick up once the rest of the world understands the advantages of MVC. I bet theres a couple of us out there with the same thoughts!

Hello Tubs,

This is indeed our plan. We will provide stripped-down MVC counterparts of our ASP.NET controls.
Visual Style Builder support is also on the list as well as extensions for Visual Studio. We will first try to port as many components as possible in the upcoming releases.

I second this, I am a fan of free but in my experience it just cannot pay the bills.  I did not use a free silverlight grid that was available from one of your competitors just because it was free.  I want to know the company has a financial stake in the component and is commiting resources to the component to earn revenue.

I am starting a new effort and decided not to use MVC because there is no grid available.  If your grid had been available as a real MVC component (rather than fake postback) I would have purchased a license over the weekend.  Currently there are no ASP.NET MVC grids that have the features needed.  I have a EXTJS license but hate using that grid just because it is slow to develop with, I will use it only as a last resort. 

Your MVC control are nifty but I would really rather have real LOB tools and I am willing to pay for them.   I can hack up java based tabstrips quickly, but coding a grid is not a trivial task.  If you search for MVC datagrid you find a lot of other people with the same issue.

I've tried the MVC Extensions 2009 Q3 Beta and it's very cool!

Will more common controls be included in 2010 Q1 final release?
e.g. ComboBox, Input, Window, Calendar, and ... Editor?,
I think these are must have in a web application.

I've also toyed with your Demo and looked at the coding....Well done guys. Q3 release is the way to go. Keep going. I agree with Wicky's comments - let us know where and when youre going to add to this suite. Give us your roadmap!

Editor - ComboBox - Calendar - Datepicker...

I havent found any link that would allow me to purchase a support licence nor what the price would be. Could you please let me know where this is?

(PS: I found one small quirk in the Demo. It seems that there is a problem with the Themes. If you change these a couple of times then it seems to bolt up (ended up on a site called "Default"  or IE said there are connection problems...). I dont see this as major problem at the moment but check it out anyway)

Roadmap
Currently, we're convinced that a date picker is a must, in order to make the date filtering in the grid more usable. Since the date picker and the calendar are essentially using the same code it is likely to get implemented. Other than that, as noted in the what's new section, it's all about what you, the community, want. A full-scale editor will be too much effort for a single quarter, yet we could start developing it and probably get to "beta" for the upcoming Q1.

We appreciate our customer's feedback - please keep it up!

Here are the ideas so far:

1. Grid features
   1. Editing support - may be available only for MVC 2.0 however as it has lots of the stuff build in.
   2. Grouping
   3. Hierarchy
   4. Client-side templates
2. Date Picker / Calendar (required for the editing support of the grid as well).
3. Input controls - numeric, masked (required for the editing support of the grid as well).
4. Editor - being the most complex control it will require more than one Q however.
5. TreeView
6. ComboBox

Re-sizable and re-orderable columns would be a nice addition to the grid.

I for one would love to see templates that work with Ajax binding (client-side templates) and also the ability to customise filters...
