Hierarchy - customizing the hierarchy cell image based on condition

I have a simple grid with hierarchy data. The thing is, not all records have a data subset, so I don't want to show the hierarchy image for those rows (since there isn't anything to expand). Can anyone think of a way to handle this? Any thoughts on having a custom image for the "expand" link based on a value in the row?
