Easy question, does the telerik reporting offer a way to generate a table of contents?

And if not, will this feature be available in the future?

Hello Kasper,

Are you referring to bookmark in the generated file? If not, please elaborate on your inquiry and we would be able to provide more info.

Kind regards,

Perhaps I could be more specific :)

I would like to be able to create a table of content in my report, which would state the heading, and the page number where this heading appears in the report, one could say a word-like ToC.

E.G.
Products...................page 2
- Cars.......................page 3
- - Volvo....................page 3
- - BMW....................page 4
- Laptops..................page 7
- - Asus.....................page 8
etc..

I dont know if this is what you would called a bookmark in the generated file?

Hi Kasper,

It can be done but not out of the box, because the data flow in the report rendering is such that there is no way to know what data is on which page before it has been completely rendered.
Once it is rendered and you see the data/page relation you can manually enter TOC using the ReportHeader section for example.

Best wishes,

Ok, thank you for your answers.

How about the first option you mentioned. Creating a document map, using bookmarks when is tha feature planning on being released?

I can see in your known limitations thread, that its currently not possible.

Hi Kasper,

Indeed it is currently not possible and that feature is in our TODO list. Unfortunately due to the fact that we work in dynamic environment, we cannot engage with a time-frame or a specific date when this feature would be part of the product. Once we start working on it, it would be immediately noted in our RoadMap, so keep an eye :)

Sincerely yours,
Steve

Hi Steve:

I am very interested in this feature and you seem to know how it can be done.  Could you provide me with a simple example code, so that I can build more from there.  My client is very interested in this.

Thanks.

Hi Tee Bee,

I'm not sure that a similar output (TOC) can be generated with the current version of Telerik Reporting. The reason is that the TOC depends on the paging and the paging depends on the media the report is being rendered into. In short, to generate such a TOC a number of actions should be performed: paginate the report in the selected media; generate the TOC; re-paginate with the TOC added. As you can see this is quite complicated routine and requires some modifications of the reporting engine to perform this back-tracking actions.

Kind regards,
Svetoslav

Anything new on this topic?
If generating TOC out of the box isn't supported by now, i'm especially interested in the possible workaroung that Steve suggested in his post.
How do i get the addressed "data/page relation"?

Hi Uwe,

My previous post is not a workaround of any kind. It only suggests that if your report contains static data or it is prepared in such a way (sections), so that they always begin on a known page, you can hardcode this information in the report header.
As for a real TOC solution, as can be seen from the release notes for Q1 and Q2, we have not worked on this feature. Once we start, it would be reflected in our RoadMap.

Steve

Hi guys, any updates on this? Will this feature be available for the next release in March?

Hi Daniel,

Currently Telerik Reporting supports a feature called DocumentMap, which allows easy navigation within the report content while previewing the report in any of the report viewers plus the map is added to the generated PDF documents as pdf bookmarks.

All you need to do in order to enable the DocumentMap is to play with the Bookmark property of the items and groups in the report. For detailed information please refer to the help article Document Map.

At this time the product does not support table of content in the beginning/end of the report pages, which is what you ask for. It is in our TODO list, but we cannot provide any time frame when it will be available.

Best wishes,
Steve

Thanks Steve. I am actually using the Bookmark property, as our reporting module has PDF as primary output for reports. However, this is only a temporary solution until you release a true TOC functionality. Hope this isn't too far though.

Daniel

The way i have worked around this problem is to design separate reports for each section and then using itextsharp to extract out number of pages, i then pass page numbers as Report parameters to another TableOfContent report and finally merge all PDFs using itextsharp. Bit of pain but serves the purpose.

Cheers,

Hi Adrian,

We haven't been able to start working on this feature yet because of some more important tasks for the product. Once we begin working on this functionality it will appear on our roadmap. Until then you could use the suggested workarounds in the previous posts.

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

Best wishes,

Hello Adrian!

What's the current status for the table of content feature. We really need to generate a TOC out of the box, because our customers require a proper TOC in order to handle the report.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andi,

As my colleague mentioned, once we begin working on this functionality it will appear on our Roadmap. We cannot provide a time frame when it will be available and for the time being if feasible for your scenario you could use the available workaround.

Kind regards,
Steve

Many of us would appreciate if Telerik gets this feature in soon.  TOC is really the main part of any official report.  Please bump up the priority of this in your TODO list.  It's been 2 years since the thread started and all we got is a promise of future implementation.

Hi,

We are glad to share that the Table of Contents feature is included in the R3 2016 release of Telerik Reporting.

You can download the product from your Telerik account and check the release notes and online help.

A sample report demonstrating the feature is available in our online demos.

Any feedback and suggestions for further improvement will be greatly appreciated.
