Hi,

I'm using win Q4 2007 and I'm looking for a decent sample that shows the classic use of toolbars with menus in winforms. E.g. implementing basic operations such as clipboard commands from tool buttons, displaying opened MDI windows in the Window menu. How to merge MDI toolbars

Also what the best practice for implemeting tool button commands - I see references to command bindings, and they look like a good way to implement commands (I don't want to handle individual toolbar click events).

I have to say that doc and samples are dissapointing.

regards,

Avner

Hi avner,

Thank you for the suggestions about our examples.

The Quick Start Framework contains examples which show the essential functionality of our controls. The examples are offered in VB and C# and should be easy to follow and understand. True, we do not have an example on how to merge toolbars in MDI scenario, nor how to use clipboard commands, and we will consider adding such examples. We are open to any suggestions that would improve their usability, so feel free to share your constructive feedback if you find them misleading or hard to follow.

As to the tool button commands, we have a Knowledge Base article demonstrating the approach of making command items: Reusing the command pattern implemented in TPF.

If you need additional assistance, do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Nikolay,

Sorry if my tone was condescending, it was just some frustration showing though as I tried to use Telerik winforms controls.

I appreciate your point about the quickstart samples, and I think they are good for beginners. However, experienced winforms developers want to get down to the nuts and bolts of putting together an application, I feel this depth is lacking from documentation and samples and should be improved on.

The documentation quality is also a bit lacking in that I have come across
properties, interfaces, classes with no explanatory text and little to no use of inline examples- look at RadBreadCrumb to see what I mean.

I think if you look at what some of your competitors do with samples  you could do a lot to help developers put telerik controls to good use.

The telerik controls look fantastic and are certainly good, but I feel what keeps them from being great is closing the loop on documentation and samples.

regards,

Avner

Hello avner,

Thank you for the detailed feedback. It will help us to focus our efforts on more specific aspects of our offering.

We have made significant improvements in the documentation since its initial offering. For example, in Q3 2007 the documentation was expanded more than three times compared to Q2 2007. We even started the Weekly Documentation Builds forum to keep you informed on the documentation progress and to gather your feedback in return. Unfortunately, our clients did not share their opinion about the improvements we have made, and we were unable to check whether we were on the right track. Still, we are making constant improvements in our documentation and samples, and the progress we have done for Q3 2007 is evidence that we will continue to improve the docs in order to make Telerik WinForms controls easier to learn, understand and work with.

Until then we will be happy to assist you with any advanced questions you may have. You may also want to review the Knowledge Base, Code LibraryVideos and White Papers we have on the WinForms controls.

Regards,
Vassil
