 Hi,

I'm trying to Convert an existing WinForms project

I have loaded our project (WinForms) into VS2015. It has update 3 and is using .NET 4.6.2.

I have run the update wizard.

The "Convert to Telerik Controls" menu does not appear!

I am using the trial version of Telerik, if that makes any difference.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thank you for reaching us.

I would suggest to select the project file under your solution and then check if the Convert to Telerik controls menu command appears.

Let us know if your case is different.

Здравейте!

No luck with that, I'm afraid. I've selected the project in the solution and the convert menu does not appear either in the main menu or the context menu. should I be looking somewhere else?

I've attached pictures to show what i get.

Thanks for you help, Лек ден!

Hello Jim,

Could you just create a blank (non-Telerik) project and add some standard .Net buttons. Then check if the option appears.

In addition, could you specify your exact Windows version? We had a known issue with 32bit Windows 10 machines. You can try the workaround from here: UI for Winforms Feedback Portal - FIX. ConversionTool - the converter tool cannot be executed on a 32-bit operating system even if the correct NET version is available.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Tried this, and it did not appear I'm afraid.

I'm using 64-bit windows 10 - see attached.

Hello Jim,

Can you open the registry editor and check if the entry from the attached image exists? We are checking for this when determining whether or not to display the option. Perhaps you could send us a screenshot of your registry as well.

I am looking forward to your reply.

Hello Jim,

I have checked our code one more time and we are checking if the System.Windows.Forms assembly is referenced. Could you please check if this assembly is available in your project references?

I am looking forward to your reply.

Hi Jim,

It appears that all requirements are fulfilled. This is why I want to suggest a GoToMeeting. We are located in Bulgaria (GMT+2) and we are available for a GoToMeeting session from Monday to Friday between 10:00 and 17:00 (local time). Just let us know when it will be convenient for you and we will send you an invitation link.

What else I can suggest is try reinstalling the suite. What are the menu options in the extension that you are seeing now? Can you send us a screenshot?

I am looking forward to your reply.

I will try a re-install, see if that works, and let you know the result.

I've attached screenshots of the Telerik menus that currently display.

If re-installing does not help, I will look into using GoToMeeting.

Hi Arvind,

Is there any error message that appears or Visual Studio just stops responding?

I am looking forward to your reply.

Hi,

I have the same issue with a crashing converter. Visual Studio 2017 completely hangs and restarts. This does NOT happen with VS2015! I have tried all kind of scenarios, different projects 32/64 bits but does not change the issue.
Please look into this. I can revert just for the conversion of some normal forms controls to VS2015, but I can imagine not everyone has two installations of VS available.

It is annoying to say the least. I just tried it with only the textbox to be converted.

And to add: all references are there, available and loaded correctly.

Rgds
Ronald

Hello Ronald,

I have tested this with a sample project and VisualStudio 2017 and it works on my side. Would it be possible for you to open a support ticket and attach one of the projects that you want to convert? This way we will be able to properly investigate this and determine what is causing the issue.

Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

I'm having a similar problem. I created the project prior to owning or installing telerik controls. I'm using Visual Studio 2017. I have a Windows Forms Application project and a Windows Forms Control Library project. All of the controls and forms are in the Control Library. All projects are using .NET Framework 4.7.2.

When I select the Control Library project, I am able to select Telerik > Telerik UI for WinForms > Convert to Telerik Controls and the App Converter wizard displays. I select "UI for WinForms, v2018.3.1016.40 (Dev) [InstallFolder]" for the version but neither convert whole solution, nor convert specific files works. Convert whole solution causes Visual Studio to close and reopen with no changes to the project or its files, and convert specific files continues to display "Loading files. Please wait..."

I tried adding a new project, both a Telerik WinForms project and also a normal WinForms project and copied over one control and one form to each of those new projects. When selecting either of the new projects, I experienced the same problem as previously described; but, I had an additional Telerik > Telerik UI for WinForms > Upgrade Wizard for both of the new projects. The wizard completes successfully and shows 0 items processed.

(Side note, there are two typos in the Convert to Telerik Controls wizard's dialogue)

Hello Paul,

There is a known issue with Visual Studio 2017. Detailed information is available here: WinForms Converter crashes with Visual Studio 15.8 - Telerik UI for WinForms

The upgrade wizard changes the references to the latest version and would do nothing if the latest version is already referenced.

I hope this will be useful. Let me know if you have additional questions.

Hello Paul,

Check if the extension is installed by going to Tools->Extensions and Updates (see attached). You need to see the converter as a separate extension.

If it's not installed go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Progress\Telerik UI for WinForms R1 2019\VSExtensions\VS2015 and try reinstalling it.

Let me know how this works.

Sorry for the delay in responses. I only work on this project, one day a week.

I have the exact same version installed.

Hello Paul,

I can suggest opening a support ticket and attaching the project. This will allow us to execute the converter on your project and determine why the converter is failing.

Thank you for your understanding.
