Is there any documentation on how to best use the Workbench?

I see that I can add a Feature Use metric to it.

However there does not appear to be any way to make it persistent, all customizations to the Workbench view disappear the next time I start a new Dashboard session.

This cannot possibly be by design, otherwise what would be the point?

Hi Thomas,

Well, it is by design, since the workbench was designed as a scratchpad to store your data temporarily while you are browsing and filtering your data so you can come back to it for comparisons and investigations. You'll be able to add most data points to the workbench from the Menu item displayed to the far right of the each chart.

Since it is a scratchpad, the workbench is cleared once you log out.

It sounds like you are looking for a way to store specific ways of retrieving data. Is it specific filter settings or specific combinations of data you want to store? Perhaps I can assist you in achieving some of these things?

Hope this helps

Well, calling it a "scratchpad" yet adding items to it with a menu that has the common "favorite" icon is a bit confusing.

Let's assume my web application has established 200 feature points. But during any point in the development cycle I might need only reference a dozen or so, but on a recurring basis over several days or several weeks. I would need to re-populate the Scratchpad EVERY DAY, or otherwise ignore it and scroll through a long list of feature tracking items.

Bottom line: the Dashboard appears to be completely unaware of who I am or my usage pattern, and allows no persistent customizations. My client users, who might very well be the primary consumers of this data from a high-level management perspective would find this unacceptable, the very idea of "dashboard" implies a view that is concise and puts all the relevant information right in front of you. What I see is a "console" application.

It seems to me that your product is lacking something essential, namely the ability to recognize the user and present data and options as they have set them for their specific requirements.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the feedback. I understand the confusion surrounding the "favorite"-like icon and the non-persistent workbench, I guess we'll need another icon to better match the actual behavior.

We do recognize the need for a more persistent selection of data selections and is actively working on a way to create more customized dashboards, which I believe would enable some of the scenarios you are describing.

Our current recommendations for better overview of a potentially large list of features are to 1) use the grouping feature to move the more interesting features to the top of the list (you can click the Configure item in the right hand menu of a feature and assign it to a named group) and 2) configure specialized Feature Views which allows you to mix and match features from different categories into a single view (you can read a bit about feature views here: http://www.telerik.com/analytics/resources/blog/12-09-05/feature-view-and-visualization-improvements)

Again, thanks for providing detailed feedback. I hope the above helps to clarify things a bit, otherwise feel free to contact us again at any time.

Soren,

Thanks for the tips and I remain very interested in future "persistence" of views.

I have defined seven groups as recommended, also prefixing them with a one-digit number to sort them in the preferred order.

We now have about forty tracking points and even in full-screen view on a HD monitor, I still have to scroll quite a bit. I suggest that you allow expand/collapse of the top-level groups, as you do with the individual features. This would be an easy enhancement if you are using the Telerik controls <g>

Alas, Feature Views are not available in the Standard subscription.

I have added this to my list of reasons for my client to upgrade to the next level, which would be a no-brainer if I were making the decision.

Time will tell....

Hi Thomas,

Again, thanks for your feedback. It is always humbling to hear from someone on the "other side" and it serves as a reminder to keep pushing the service forward. I will certainly take your points on persistence in selection and the "collapsable group" suggestions and move them into our backlog.

Thanks again for your detailed feedback.

Hi Durga

Perhaps you should open a new ticket for this. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with analytics?
