All I need to display some additional data when the row is expanded, I'm able to accomplish this using both RowDetails and Hierarchical methods. Is there any consideration of choosing one over the other?

The main difference is the fact that RadGridView can generate hierarchy automatically - runtime however you will get exactly the same behavior with both row-details and hierarchy.
